THE VIDALIAS Melodyland 1995

The Vidalias Biography by Jack Leaver

One of the most promising bands of the insurgent country movement of the '90s, the Atlanta five-piece the Vidalias -- named for Georgia's famous onions -- blended country, rockabilly, bluesy rock, and occasional swing, deriving a sound that recalls the country-rock of the Flying Burrito Brothers and at times hints at the Western swing of Asleep at the Wheel. Led by the vocal, guitar, and songwriting talents of Charles Walston, the group also included Henry Bruns on pedal steel guitar, bassist Jim Johnson, guitarist Page Waldrop, and David Michaelson -- of the original Georgia Satellites -- on drums.

SCHNELL FENSTER OK Alright A Huh Oh Yeah 1991

Discogs

Schnell Fenster Biography by Chris Woodstra

Schnell Fenster was an eclectic New Zealand-based band comprised of former-Split Enz members Phil Judd (guitar/vocals/keyboards), Noel Crombie (drums), and Nigel Griggs (bass), plus Michael Den Elzen (guitar) (the short-lived original lineup also included Enz keyboardist Eddie Rayner). The band formed in 1986 and released their first album, Sound of Trees, in 1988 in Australia. The same year, the band recorded a handful of country-tinged songs for the film Rikky and Pete as Noel's Cowards. A warm reception in their homeland and a revived interest in Split Enz prompted an American contract with Atlantic Records the following year. Sound of Trees saw a belated worldwide release in 1990, but without a supporting tour outside and poor promotion, the album quickly faded. The follow-up, 1991's OK Alright a Huh Oh Yeah, suffered the same fate, this time with a release limited to Australasia. While promoting the album, Crombie developed tinnitus, forcing them to postpone the tour. They eventually broke up, with the members playing a more active role behind the scenes in the music business.

DYMAXION Sound Recording 7 inch 1998

Discogs

Dymaxion was the New York-based post-rock project of Jeremy Novak and Claudia Newell, who specialized in fusing playful sound collages with live instrumentation. They often shared Stereolab's retro-futurist obsessions, sampling old sound-effects LPs, robotic voices, and an array of vintage electronics. Most of their songs were underpinned by funky, off-kilter drum loops, and borrowed the fragmentary songwriting aesthetic of indie rockers like Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 and, by extension, cartoon experimenters Carl Stalling and Raymond Scott.

THE PANOPOLY ACADEMY GLEE CLUB Rah! 1998

Discogs

Formed in spring 1996 in Bloomington, IN, The Panoply Academy is a name umbrella that survived throughout the central Indiana collective's various lineup changes. Initially, and for the lengthiest period, The Panoply Academy Glee Club rocked with Nick Quagliara on bass, Marty Sprowles on guitar, Darin Glenn on guitar and trombone, Bekkah Walker on keyboards and samples, and Ryan Hicks providing the drums, with everyone on vocal duties. After "Rah!" and "What We Defend", and the departure of two members from the outfit, The Panoply Academy Corps Of Engineers were born - and gone were the keyboards, samples, and driving bass. Concentus was issued in April of 2000. In 2000 they also released a track on an acapella compilation as The Panoply Academy Die-Cast Cadets. The last incarnation of the band gave the world the final name of The Panoply Academy Legionnaires. No Dead Time was released in 2001.

THE WILD FLOWERS Tales Like These 1990

Discogs

The Wild Flowers Biography by AllMusic

Like Del Amitri, Wolverhampton’s Wild Flowers became tired of a disinterested UK pop scene and looked to America for inspiration and appreciation. After two singles, ‘Melt Like Ice’ and ‘Things Have Changed’, and an album, The Joy Of It All, on Reflex in 1984, the fledgling outfit were dealt a blow when original guitarist Dave Newton left to form the Mighty Lemon Drops. The remaining members, Neal Cook (guitar, vocals), Mark Alexander (bass) and Dave Fisher (drums), eventually found a replacement in Dave Atherton, and the band duly signed to aspiring local label Chapter 22. They broke their two-year silence in 1986 with ‘It Ain’t So Easy’, followed later that year by ‘A Kind Of Kingdom’. Both singles were then coupled on a mini-album, Dust, primarily aimed at introducing the Wild Flowers to the US market which was more sympathetic to their New York-influenced rock sound. The band became the first British act to sign with Slash in the USA, releasing Sometime Soon in 1988, preceded by ‘Broken Chains’ and ‘Take Me For A Ride’ in the UK. The band’s Tales Like These was recorded in the inspirational surroundings of California, by which time a new drummer, Simon Atkins, had been found. The album made little headway in the UK (where Slash is handled by London Records) and the group concentrated more on performing in the USA.

SALAKO Re-inventing Punctuation 1998

Discogs

Salako Biography by Stephen Cramer

Starting as a bedroom recording project, England's Salako began casually in 1995, recording in drummer Luke Barwell's bedroom, with guitarists David Langdale and James Waudby, drummer Luke Barwell, and friend Stu on bass. The band's light, wistful sound appealed instantly to fans of international indie pop. Barwell moved to bass guitar in 1997, and Stu changed to keyboards. Thomas Spencer joined the group on drums. The band soon drew the interest of England's Jeepster Records. After some unimpressive studio sessions, Jeepster realized that the bandmembers were more adept at home recordings, so the label financed a home studio for the group.

Their debut album, the 20-song Re-Inventing Punctuation, was released in 1998 on Jeepster to mixed reviews. The album, at the very least, introduced the band's quirky and offbeat sound to people outside of their hometown of Hull, England. The Growing Up in the Night and The Moonlight Radiates a Purple Glow in His World singles were released to promote the debut full-length. The group enjoyed a session with legendary John Peel of the BBC at year's end. Musicality was released in 1999. The 17-track album impressed listeners with its vast sound and cleaner recording than its predecessor. A slew of guest musicians added to the richness of the album's sound. "Look Left" featured a 200-member choir recorded at Hull's Sutton Methodist Church. The Bird and the Bag single was released in 1999 to complement the album.

The band's audience continued to grow. Langdale left the band in late 1999, at the end of a European tour with Pavement. The remaining members set out to release four EPs over a 12-month period. Each disc was titled after the places where and dates on which the cover photos were taken. The Mappleton Sands 201298 EP was released in October 1999, and included six songs that sounded more like folky psychedelia than the light indie pop fare that the band started with. The second in the series, the Ventimiglia 120899 EP was released in May 2000. Soon after, Luke Barwell left the band to record solo work under the pseudonym of Bitmap. The remaining members took a few years off, emerging in 2004 to announce the release of The Story of Our Life So Far in April 2004 on the Tablature Records label.

JUNE PANIC The Fall Of Atom: A Thesis On Entropy 1997

Discogs

June Panic Biography by Jason Nickey

June Panic is a singer-songwriter and sonic experimenter from Fargo, North Dakota. Bob Dylan, Marc Bolan, and Skip Spence all come to mind when listening to Panic: Dylan because he begins with traditional American music forms and then twists them to fit his own idiosyncratic vision, often to nearly unrecognizable extremes; Bolan for his penchant for pomp and outrageous-even ridiculous- imagery; and Spence, not simply because he plays every instrument on his albums, but because of a neurotic claustrophobia that acts as the common tread among his disparate styles. Panic's vocal style reminds of Gordon Gano of the Violent Femmes and the subjects of his songs seem to cover much the same territory as the Femmes: jittery angst, sexual frustration, and self-depreciation.

CLOCKHAMMER Klinefelter 1992

Discogs

Clockhammer Biography by Greg Prato

Although they remain obscure to this day, the Nashville, TN, alt-metal trio Clockhammer was picked by many as a strong contender for breakthrough success during their original run together in the early '90s. Combining elements of alternative, prog rock, metal, and fusion, the group formed in the late '80s with members Byron Bailey (vocals, guitar), Matt Swanson (bass), and Ken Coomer (drums). The group issued a pair of full-length albums, a self-titled debut in 1991, and a sophomore effort titled Klinefelter in 1992, before friction between bandmembers (as well as their record company, First Warning, going out of business), led to the group's breakup shortly thereafter. By 1994, Bailey had re-formed Clockhammer with new members Mark Smoot and Christian Nagle joining up, issuing the album Houses in Motion the same year (which saw the band exploring a heavier, almost Black Sabbath-esque sound) -- although nothing has been heard from Clockhammer since. If you're a fan of the melodic yet progressive sounds of King's X and Collective Soul, you're sure to love Clockhammer.
