Artist Biography by

Exhibiting agile experimentations and building risky conceptions floating in between punk and the most traditional rock roots, Baboon's eclectic creations are ruthless shows of compositional expertise. Although an almost truly punk act, they add up the sound of instruments such as trombone, allowing them to go far beyond that narrowing style frontier. The band was formed in 1991 by Andrew Huffstetler (vocals, trombone), Bart Rogers (bass), Will Johnson (drums), and Mike Rudnicki (guitar, backing vocals). Their first move was the recording of two tapes, Ed Lobster and Sausage, which eventually promoted the group's performances in cities such as Fort Worth and Dallas. In 1992, Johnson left to join Centro-Matic, being replaced by Steven Barnett. Soon after the lineup change, Baboon recorded their first single "Save Me" for Direct Hit Records, months before their opening record for Silver Girl Records; "Tool" was another single. By 1994, the band signed their first contract for the release of their debut album with Grass Records. This was the necessary boost for the intense touring that followed during the rest of the year, taking the band both to the West and East Coast and leading to performances including one at the CMJ Convention. Leaving by the end of 1994, Bart Rogers was replaced by Bryan Schmitz, who left the year after, later replaced by Mark Hughes. Their debut album Face Down in Turpentine finally hit record stores that same year, and represented the best catch of the band's unique sound. Baboon then departed for several nationwide appearances that went on through 1995. One year later The Numb EP came out, which served as an intro for the band's second album, 1997's Secret Robot Control, released on Wind-Up. After several relentless performances throughout the U.S. Baboon recorded their third album, 1999's We Sing and Play. A live album, A Bum Note and a Bead of Sweat, in February of 2001, was their latest release.

Pop deconstructionists Bare Minimum were formed in the Bay Area in 1991 by singer/guitarist Brian Speckman and guitarist Mark Pinkos. Upon moving to Seattle a short time later, they were joined by bassist Anthony Champa and drummer Joe Plummer; their eponymously titled debut LP appeared on the Rx Remedy in 1995, followed later that same year by a single on Sub Pop. After the 1996 EP Night We Streak, Bare Minimum returned in 1998 with Can't Cure the Nailbiters.

Gnome Biography

by Stacia Proefrock

Gnome is reluctantly described by C/Z Records, the label that gave them their break, as bubble grunge. Combining guitar grinds with fuzzy pop, Gnome released a series of albums in the early '90s on C/Z after getting tired of waiting for the cash-strapped Sub Pop Records, the label that had originally signed them, to do anything with their material. Their first album, Six Hi Surprise Tower, released in the spring of 1992, allowed bandmembers Loren Evans (vocals/guitar), David Band (guitar), Ron Garcia (bass), and Mallette Maloney (drums) to release some of the material that they had been working on while touring with Soundgarden and the Fluid. Their second release, in 1993, also on C/Z Records, Fiberglass, was produced by John Auer of the Posies and contained more of the pop hooks that Six Hi Surprise Tower had brought. Their third album, Juicy Mommy, was released in 1994 on Earthling Records.

Artist Biography by

Ruth's Refrigerator was a short-lived collaboration between Leicester, England-based neo-psychedelic guitarist/songwriter Alan Jenkins (formerly of the Deep Freeze Mice and the Chrysanthemums) and the British indie pop band Po! (not to be confused with American alt-rockers P'o). The members were Jenkins, namesake singer/guitarist Ruth Miller, keyboardist Blodwyn P. Teabag (whom Jenkins later married), bassist Terri Lowe, and drummer Robyn Gibson. Ruth's Refrigerator released two fine albums' worth of jangly psych-pop, 1990s Suddenly a Disfigured Head Parachuted and 1991's A Lizard Is a Submarine on Grass, but was never meant to be a full-time project. Miller and Lowe returned to Po!, and Jenkins, Teabag, and Gibson went on to form the Creams.

SISTER PSYCHIC Fuel 1992

 Discogs

Sister Psychic is an Alternative Rock, Alternative Pop, Indie band ran by Andy Davenhall during his musical peak, along with Christian Fulghum tagging along for the ride of the band.

Being especially known locally throughout Seattle, they'd often be confused for being "Grunge", due to the grungy-ness of their current musical space. They made live debuts covering already existing songs like "Lucifer Sam" and "Kim The Waitress", their debut release, Fuel in 1992 being even more grungy due to the harsh times Andy was facing, which affected the music heavily; Though the band is far more diverse than that. Ranging from Northwest, Indie Folk, and New York Alternative Pop, the band sounded closer to Soundgarden, more than they did compared to popular grunge bands at the time like Nirvana, yet still with many Soulful attributes.

Davenhall & Fulghum, have had a long history of experimenting with indie songs, and when Andy had moved from Upstate New York to Seattle, from around the Pacific Northwest area, this is where most of the ideas for Sister Psychic started forming. Thanks to Andy, the band got in touch with huge helps like Chris Hanzsek and Jack Endino, for production of their releases. Along with support from PopLLama, Restless Records, and even some experience (from Andy) working with Sub Pop, they would be able to launch 2 more albums after making Fuel.

Surrender, You Freak, was very much on the experimental side of bringing together Folk and Alternative Rock, which didn't end too well commercial, for such a different sound wouldn't reach too far with the mainstream, though it made enough copies to warrant their last release Catch And Release before disbanding fully in 1997

Though Andy & Christian would comeback together again with the, Ottoman Bigwigs, to form The Lawnmowers (4), the spiritual successor band to Sister Psychic.
