HALF STRING Eclipse Oval Hue 1995

biography

by Richie Unterberger

Although Arizona's Half String didn't release their first proper album until 1996, their droning brand of multi-guitar rock is very much grounded in the alternative sounds of the late '80s and early '90s. Like a less bombastic, gentler take on the My Bloody Valentine sound, they also favor languid, slurry vocals and hazy harmonies, other staples of post-punk underground music. Although they have been releasing singles and EPs since 1993, and put out a German compilation CD in 1995, A Fascination with Heights (Independent Project, 1996) was their first proper full-length U.S. title. Unfortunately, it was also their last. Soon after the release, the band said their farewells. In 2012, Captured Tracks released a compilation of all of their EPs titled Maps for Sleep 1991-1994.
