DOGS Three Is A Crowd 1993

Discogs

Artist Biography

by Olivier Duboc

The Dogs were formed in Rouen (Normandie) in 1973 around Dominique Laboubée (vocals, guitars), Paul Peschenaert (guitars), François Camuzeaux (bass), and Michel Gross (drums). At first, the band could have been filed under pub rock for its set lists comprised of many covers, from the Velvet Underground to the Flamin' Groovies. But they quickly came up with some English-sung original material, mainly inspired by their British and American peers, from the Flamin' Groovies to Dr. Feelgood. Like locals Little Bob Story, they were something way more than just a regional phenomenon, and despite an unsuccessful commercial career, the Dogs left a considerable legacy with the release of their two most famous LPs: 1979's Different and 1982's Too Much Class for the Neighbourhood. The constant support of France's veteran music magazine Rock & Folk wasn't enough to make the Dogs explode to a larger scale, but they remain a treasured cult band for many, especially since their definitive end with singer Dominique Laboubée's death in 2002, at the early age of 45.

WEAPON OF CHOICE Highperspice 1996

Discogs

Artist Biography

by Steve Huey

Weapon of Choice grew out of the ashes of Marshall Law, the band that gave the Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Arik Marshall, albeit briefly. Arik's brother Lonnie "Meganut" Marshall put together his own collective, Weapon of Choice, which plays a style dubbed "nutmeg" -- a mix of socially metaphorical lyrics, rock, reggae, funk (particularly George Clinton), hip-hop, and jazz drawing inspiration from a similar freewheeling musical hybrid pioneered by Fishbone. In fact, Marshall has played with Fishbone side projects like Trulio Disgracias. In addition to bassist/vocalist Marshall and co-founder Keefus Ciancia on keyboards, Weapon of Choice includes singer Audra Cunningham, singer Mark Cross, guitarist Finn Hammer, trombonist Tom-bone Ralls, and drummer Derek "D-Rek" Pierce. The band released its debut album, Nutmeg Sez "Bozo the Town, in 1993, and followed it with 1996's Highperspice.

SHOOTYZ GROOVE Jammin In Vicious Environments 1994

Discogs

Artist Biography

by Steve Huey

One of many bands in the '90s to experiment with fusing the aggressive sounds of hip-hop and hardcore/heavy metal, Shootyz Groove boasts two official MCs (Sense and Season) heading a lineup that also originally featured guitarist Donny, bassist Spec, and drummer Dose. Shootyz Groove formed in the Bronx, NY, in 1992 and had a record deal within two years, signing to Mercury. A live EP recorded in Queens, Respect, was released in 1994, and was followed later that year by their official debut, Jammin' in Vicious Environments (also known as J.I.V.E.). Shootyz Groove toured with acts covering both sides of their own musical spectrum, including Boogie Down Productions and Slayer. However, things did not continue so smoothly; bassist Spec left the band, and Shootyz Groove found itself off of Mercury. Undaunted, they released a difficult-to-find live album, Live J.I.V.E., in 1995, and got a new bass player in Paul "Freak Love" and, thanks to frequent touring, a new deal with Roadrunner Records. Their Roadrunner debut, Hipnosis, was released in 1997; moving to Reprise, the group resurfaced two years later with High Definition.

THE PLIMSOULS Kool Trash 1998

Discogs

Artist Biography

by Denise Sullivan

Formed in Los Angeles in 1978, the Plimsouls merged roots, retro and guitar rock with a ramshackle punk aesthetic. At a time when rock music was shifting gears, the Plimsouls' brand of soul-punk -- a modern take on '60s soul, British Invasion and garage rock sounds -- fit right in with the '80s post-punk American guitar band movement. Known for their kinetic live performances, the Plimsouls had an exceptional frontman in singer/songwriter Peter Case whose decision to pursue a solo career effectively ended their '80s run, but whose songs have kept the group's slight catalog and legacy in the public eye.

Case came to the Plimsouls with experience, having previously collaborated with Jack Lee and Paul Collins in the Nerves, a precursor-to-punk D.I.Y. group with a 1976 single, "Hangin' on the Telephone" (later recorded by Blondie). Living in L.A., Case started to play with locals Louie Ramírez (drums) and Dave Pahoa (bass) in 1979, and within the year Eddie Muñoz (of Austin's the Skunks) joined them on guitar. After recording one EP, Zero Hour in 1980, and a self-titled album in 1981 that contained the now classic power pop anthems "Zero Hour" and "Hush, Hush," the group self-financed a single, "A Million Miles Away." The jangling guitar song was picked up by influential FM station KROQ and thanks to trend-setting DJ Rodney Bingenheimer, the song became a local smash, catapulting the Plimsouls toward wider recognition. The inclusion of "A Million Miles Away" on the soundtrack to the cult film Valley Girl cemented the band's reputation as power pop icons and remains a timeless classic.

An album for Geffen, Everywhere at Once, followed in 1983 but ultimately, the liaison with the label was not a lasting one and the Plimsouls broke up shortly after its release. A testament to the band's stage power is the live document, One Night in America, released in 1988. Following the group's dissolution, Case went on to record a solo album for Geffen; he remains a critically admired and influential artist with a large folk, blues and rock repertoire. In 1995-1996, the band, sans Ramírez, re-formed and played a few reunion dates with former Blondie drummer Clem Burke and released a new studio LP Kool Trash in 1998. In 2005, Oglio Records reissued One Night in America; the original lineup (with Bryan Head on drums) remains together and continues to perform wherever and whenever there's a demand for their unique soul-punk sound.
