STONE FOX Totally Burnt 1998

AllMusic Review by Tom Demalon

Produced by ex-4-Non Blonde leader Linda Perry, the San Francisco quintet Stone Fox bears similarities to their Bay Area predecessors who broke the proverbial bank with their hit "What's Up?" Primarily female, drummer Brent being the only male, Stone Fox cranks out an album's worth of riot grrrl rock. "Shakey Egg" has a cool, quasi-psychedelic intro before settling in to a moody, hypnotic groove that intensifies on the chorus. "Sandwich King" bolts from the gates like a grunge version of Heart's "Barracuda" and "Poach" has a dissonant blues opening. On "Lamby's Legs" and "Puppet," the arrangements are gentler and acoustic, adding poignancy to the lyrics (both allude to domestic problems). Stone Fox proves to be versatile and, at moments, quite riveting.

Artist Biography by Eduardo Rivadavia

Formed in 1991 by White Zombie's original guitarist Tom 5 (so nicknamed, legend has it, because his playing was the equal of five guitarists), New Jersey's Angel Rot was one of the most overlooked players in New York's underground metal scene during the '90s. With bassist Mike Davis and drummer Steven Kleiner in tow, Angel Rot recorded their debut, Unlistenable Hymns of Indulgent Damnage, in 1993. But the master tapes were reputedly lost and even after being recovered, the album only saw the light of day six years later when it was released by the Man's Ruin label. By then, the trio's touring lineup included bassist Gyda Gash and drummer Scott Octane.

Artist Biography by Eduardo Rivadavia

In the Tail of a Comet One of Sweden's first and most enduring stoner rock bands, Dozer were formed in 1995 by vocalist and guitarist Frederik Nordin, lead guitarist Tommi Holappa, drummer Erik Bäckwall, and bassist Magnus Larsson, who would soon quit to pursue a martial arts career and be replaced by Johan Rockner. Dozer hailed from the sleepy town of Borlänge, but quickly started making waves on the international stoner rock scene when 1998's "Hawaii Cottage" was awarded "single of the week" honors by Kerrang! magazine. Several split releases with Demon Cleaner (1998), Domestic Dudes (1999), and Unida (1999), plus another single (1998's "The Phantom") later, and Dozer unleashed their year 2000 full-length debut, In the Tail of a Comet, through up-and-coming stoner rock label Man's Ruin.

Madre de Dios Despite being recorded for a meager $500, the record landed on many critics' year-end Top Ten lists, and set the stage for a much anticipated sophomore effort in 2001's Madre de Dios. Unfortunately, both Dozer and their album fell victim to Man's Ruin's much lamented bankruptcy debacle later that year, and a third opus, Call It Conspiracy, would get lost in the shuffle when released by vinyl experts Molten Universe in 2002. The members of Dozer then decided to take some time off from touring and recording to pursue parallel projects (most notably Holappa's Greenleaf), and only reconvened in early 2005 for a European tour with Extol and Mastodon. This bout of roadwork was enough to start the gears turning again, though, and after installing new drummer Daniell Liden, Dozer finally set to recording their fourth full album, Through the Eyes of Heathens, released in early 2006 by Detroit-based Small Stone Records.

FURTIPS Stand Back, Speak Normally 1995

Discogs

Artist Biography by Linda Seida

Indie band Furtips formed in the Netherlands out of the remains of a group called De Artsen. Herman Bunskoeke, De Artsen's bass player, pulled together Thom Vanderdoef, Jane Pol, and Camille Courbois with the intent of playing hardcore, but his desire failed to materialize. Pol and Courbois, the group's songsmiths, were unfamiliar with the genre. When Bettie Serveert, another group that Bunskoeke was affiliated with, started to take off in a big way, the other members of Furtips gave their founder the boot and invited a musician who called himself the Royal Penguin Saver to take Bunskoeke's place on bass. The new bassist previously played the trombone, and the band's official history claims that he turned to the bass after finding one of the instruments in a container of garbage. A flurry of songwriting activity followed, and the band recorded with equipment that was on loan from others. The result was a less-than-clear sound, and the recordings the band made were lumped into the category of lo-fi, although members of the group declined to describe their music with that term.

Furtips' first release, They Should Be Crowned, was issued in cassette format only. A copy of the tape made its way to a label called Ajax in Chicago, IL. Following that initial introduction to the band, the label went on to issue Stand Back, Speak Normally, a CD, and Pitched Up Twinkie, an EP. American sales were respectable. Back in the Netherlands, however, the Furtips releases received almost no acceptance. For a two-year period beginning in 1996, the group was less productive as it lost drummers and their label ceased operations. The band picked up speed after receiving an invitation from Animal World Recordings, another U.S. label, to contribute to After the Divine Flying Insect, a compilation. The band's album Le Louping was issued by Animal World Recordings in 1998. The release is a collection of numbers written during the downtime after Ajax had left the picture. In 1999, the band paired with the group Marmoset on a 7". Lineup changes continued to occur, with Beetle Sonique and Chief Wasdatwat coming aboard to play keyboards and drums respectively on the 2001 Animal World Recordings CD When My Baby Smiles at Me, I Go to Rio.

THE CAKEKITCHEN Far From The Sun 1993

Discogs

Artist Biography by Michael Sutton

Messages for the Cakekitchen Graeme Jefferies (vocals, guitar, piano, viola) is a cult icon in New Zealand, and his band Cakekitchen helped to solidify his high-ranking status in the country's underground scene. After the breakup of This Kind of Punishment, Jefferies formed Cakekitchen in the late '80s. Taking their name from Jefferies' 1988 solo LP Messages for the Cakekitchen, Cakekitchen is basically a revolving set of musicians, all of whom are led by Jefferies. Expressing the similarly gloomy Velvet Underground-styled narratives and post-punk raggedness of Jefferies' previous groups, Cakekitchen released their first album, Time Flowing Backwards, in 1991. The band was a trio back then featuring Jefferies, Rachael King (bass), and Robert Key (drums). By 1993's Far From the Sun, King and Key were gone, replaced by bassist Keith McLean and drummer Huw Dainow. On 1995's Stompin' Thru the Boneyard, Cakekitchen became a duo consisting of Jefferies (playing a multitude of instruments) and drummer Jean-Yves Douet

AllMusic Review by Steven McDonald

Looking at the back cover, one might expect this to be in the vein of Prince, but it's not. Instead, it's well-done flower rock with a lot of musical strengths. It's laden with sitars, tablas, odd sounds, and melodies, though it doesn't resort to the tricks of nuevo-psychedelic music to get by.
