STONE FOX Totally Burnt 1998

AllMusic Review by Tom Demalon

Produced by ex-4-Non Blonde leader Linda Perry, the San Francisco quintet Stone Fox bears similarities to their Bay Area predecessors who broke the proverbial bank with their hit "What's Up?" Primarily female, drummer Brent being the only male, Stone Fox cranks out an album's worth of riot grrrl rock. "Shakey Egg" has a cool, quasi-psychedelic intro before settling in to a moody, hypnotic groove that intensifies on the chorus. "Sandwich King" bolts from the gates like a grunge version of Heart's "Barracuda" and "Poach" has a dissonant blues opening. On "Lamby's Legs" and "Puppet," the arrangements are gentler and acoustic, adding poignancy to the lyrics (both allude to domestic problems). Stone Fox proves to be versatile and, at moments, quite riveting.
