AUTOMATIC Transmitter 1996

Discogs

Automatic began as the Spinouts when Matt Fenton met up with Alex Jarvis as freshmen in high school in 1987. The two attended Queenscliff High School in Victoria, Australia.

Bassist Matt Fenton, Alex Jarvis on guitar, drummer Leigh Marlow (who was replaced by drummer Danny Plant), and bassist Richard Taylor make up the post-grunge group. The band developed its unique sound by combining the styles of many different groups, and was influenced by such '80s and '90s outfits as the Pixies, Smashing Pumpkins, and U2.

In 1994, the band made its first album, Automatic, which was released independently. The album led to much success for the band and produced a new group of listeners. With its punk rock sound, the group signed with the Murmur record label in 1995. Their first album there was Sister K.

MOTOR ACE Motor Ace 1999

Discogs

Artist Biography

by AllMusic

The Australian quartet Motor Ace broke through in their native country in the late 90s with their brand of melodic pop rock aimed at the adult market. Comprising Patrick Robertson (vocals/guitar/piano), Matt Balfe (bass/organ/vocals), Dave Ong (guitar/piano/vocals) and Damian Costin (drums), the band’s roots stretch back to the early 90s in an obscure group called Snowblind. By late 1997, Snowblind was ditched in favour of a new name, Motor Ace, after the band emerged from a four-month songwriting session. A year later, the Motor Ace line-up was finally put into place, and instead of immediately attempting to land a major label recording contract, the quartet opted to independently issue a double a-sided single, ‘Criminal Past’/‘Five Star Laundry’. Local live dates soon followed, that eventually resulted in the band signing a recording contract in February 1999 (with Festival Mushroom Records). With producer Paul Mechercher overseeing the sessions, the band issued a five-song EP, Motor Ace, later the same year. Further EPs and singles followed (2000’s American Shoes and Death Defy, plus 2001’s Hey Driver), while airplay on Australia’s Triple J and a spot opening for the Foo Fighters on a club tour only heightened their profile.

Motor Ace’s debut album, Five Star Laundry, finally appeared in March 2001, and was supported by the band’s very first headlining tour. The album was an immediate hit back home (peaking at number 4 on the album charts), as the quartet snagged another prime touring spot, opening for Blink-182. The track ‘Death Defy’ also became well known through its use in the opening credits to the popular television series The Secret Life Of Us. The Carry On and Keeping Secrets EPs followed before Motor Ace’s follow-up, Shoot This, was issued in August 2002.

The Prayer Boat are an Irish folk/indie band formed in 1987 in Blessington, Co. Wicklow. SPACE Tin Planet 1998

Discogs

Artist Biography

by MacKenzie Wilson

Stealing from the campy styles of Echo & the Bunnymen and the infectious sounds of the Boo Radleys, Liverpool's Space were formed in 1993 by Tommy Scott (vocals/bass), Jamie Murphy (guitar), and Andy Parle (drums). The band inked a contract with the indie label Gut Records before issuing Me and You Versus the World in 1996, but it was the release of "Female of the Species" one year later that helped Space truly establish themselves on the alternative rock scene. By the time of the kitschy single's release, keyboardist Franny Griffiths and vocalist Dave "Yorkie" Palmer had also joined the group, and Space were enjoying favorable success with their Universal Records debut, Spiders. Already a massive hit in the U.K., "Female of the Species" also gained traction in America via college radio and MTV. A tour of the U.S. followed in mid-1997; however, it wasn't as bright as the band and critics had hoped.

Murphy disappeared for a while, and the death of Palmer's mother, Gladys Palmer (a legendary singer from Liverpool), devastated the band. Parle (who died while crossing a street in Liverpool in 2009) left the band shortly thereafter and was replaced by drummer Leon Caffrey, who climbed aboard just before the release of Tin Planet in spring 1998. The record hit number three on the U.K. charts, although it failed to chart in America. Space then partnered with songwriter/producer Edwyn Collins and readied a third studio effort, Love You More Than Football, for release in late 2001. The album was shelved indefinitely, however, and the band took a long break before returning in 2004 with Suburban Rock 'n' Roll, an album that eschewed the polished sound of Tin Planet for something more akin to Spiders. However, the group disbanded the following year. Six years later, Space re-emerged with a new lineup in 2011 and this incarnation released Attack of the Mutant 50ft Kebab in 2014.

MILLENCOLIN Use Your Nose EP 1993

Discogs

Artist Biography

by Jason Ankeny

Taking their name from a skateboard trick (a variation on the skateboarding maneuver dubbed melancholy), Swedish skatepunk crew Millencolin emerged in the mid-'90s with a sound inspired by Southern California hardcore acts like Operation Ivy, the Descendents, and NOFX. The group broke internationally in 2000 with the release of their gold-selling fourth long-player Pennybridge Pioneers, which adopted a more alternative rock-forward approach. Since then, the band has enjoyed a long and steady career, releasing a string of successful albums like Kingwood (2005), True Brew (2015), and SOS (2019), while keeping the flame of melodic skate punk ablaze.

CHAPPAQUIDDICK SKYLINE Chappaquiddick Skyline 1999

Artist Biography

by Jason Ankeny

Chappaquiddick Skyline was the side project of singer/songwriter Joe Pernice, previously best known for fronting the alt-country band Scud Mountain Boys as well as its chamber-pop predecessor the Pernice Brothers. While earning his master's degree in creative writing and poetry from the University of Massachusetts, Pernice co-founded the Northampton-based Scuds in 1991, earning great critical acclaim for the heartbreaking lyrics and gorgeous melodies which distinguished albums like 1996's Massachusetts; seeking to move beyond the band's rustic minimalism, he formed the Pernice Brothers with sibling Bob to expand into lushly-orchestrated pop, issuing 1998's Overcome by Happiness to further critical fanfare. Chappaquiddick Skyline emerged from the Pernice Brothers' touring lineup and also featured bassist Thom Monahan, guitarist Peyton Pinkerton, keyboardist Laura Stein and drummer Mike Belitsky; their superb self-titled debut appeared on Sub Pop in early 2000.

MOMUS 20 Vodka Jellies 1996

Biography

Named after the Greek god of mockery, Momus is the alias of Nick Currie, an erudite and esoteric Scottish-born singer, songwriter, author, and provocateur whose genre-defying music careens from acoustic ballads and electro-pop to easy listening and post-punk and back again. Known for his rich baritone and fascination with themes of psychosexuality and cultural and political crises, Momus emerged in the early '80s as the leader of the avant-garde band the Happy Family. He joined the Creation label in 1987 and released his second solo LP, The Poison Boyfriend. Momus moved to Cherry Red Records in the mid-'90s and found considerable success in Japan, where he eventually relocated. Since his 1986 debut, the biblical-themed Circus Maximus, he has averaged an album a year, with highlights arriving via 1998's analog Baroque Little Red Songbook, ...

THE DARK FANTASTIC The Dark Fantastic 1999

Discogs

 Artist Biography

by Charles Spano

The Dark Fantastic carves moody, haunted songs out of the soundscape of psychedelic desert rock. The music produces a space that is at once a chronicle of the trials and tribulations of everyday middle Americans and a plunge into a world of emotional nomads: Lovers, wanderers, and killers that drift in and out of places and lives.

Mark Pickerel began the Dark Fantastic as his solo project while drumming in post-grunge Truly, a band that helped to define the Northwestern sound with their mind-bending full-length on Capitol Records, Fast Stories From Kid Coma. In 1997, after Truly's last record, Feeling You Up, Pickerel enlisted guitarist Jesse Roberts and bassist Mike Elkins to make the Dark Fantastic a full-blown band. Mark Pickerel's songwriting draws from his vast experience playing with the best musicians in the Pacific Northwest, including Kurt Cobain (check out Pickerel on the Nirvana box set Ain't It a Shame). The Dark Fantastic's 1999 self-titled debut draws on influences like Pink Floyd and Echo and the Bunnymen for a dark, somber pop sound. At the same time, it references Pickerel's early days with the Screaming Trees on the band's most brilliant forays into psychedelia, Even If and Especially When and Buzz Factory, as well as his more sobering work on old friend Mark Lanegan's solo albums. In 2000, Pickerel cut a record with Jim Carroll and joined Neko Case and Her Boyfriends. The touch of Neko Case's country can be heard on the Dark Fantastic's 2001 follow-up Goodbye Crooked Scar, where Mark Pickerel's Brian Wilson harmonies whisper through a far east-meets-west supernatural trip.

THE MOON FESTIVAL Tornillo 1995

Discogs

AllMusic Review by Jack Rabid

This Dallas group's Pedestal Fall EP was promising atmospheric rock, so those familiar with that EP may be caught unaware by the completely new, vaguely power pop direction here. But as it happens, like Chopper's similar Madhouse on Castle Street, Tornillo is a much higher accomplishment. A tune such as "The Rearranger" is more akin to Big Star's "When My Baby's Beside Me" than, say, the Comsat Angels (who thanked this band's multi-talented singer Salim Nourallah on one of their LPs, so these guys do know their atmospheric stuff), and the music is constructed so delicately with care it's way beyond run of the mill. One immediately notices the perfectly arranged piano and trumpet in the background of "Is It Too Late" and is captivated by the super-production and tempting "pring" of each guitar pluck and "dut-dit" backing vocals on "Flawed By Magnificence" (the standout), before the Leslie guitar sound is even added. But this is what you would expect from Beatles fans -- the way the title of "When I Was a Boy" is sung, it's a sneaky illusion to John Lennon's Revolver classic "She Said She Said." And what a handsome, flawlessly executed sleeve booklet, complete with lyrics. These people love the music enough to work their butts off on every facet, with one surprising sound after another. Pop with heart.
