Artist Biography

by Greg Prato

According to Battershell singer/guitarist Tammy Lynn, their sound is a combination of country lyrics with punk music. While this may not be entirely true, the trio (which also includes Jamie R. Baker on bass and vocals, and Charlie Lauth on drums) creates a sound similar to Veruca Salt, but is more challenging and unpredictable. Formed in the mid-'90s in New York City, the band began rehearsing and playing; soon Ng Records became interested in their sweet alterna-pop, and signed the band in 1995. After the release of the EP Beautiful Princess of Spit in the same year, the group began touring the nation (including an appearance at the popular Foundations Forum showcase in 1996) and building their fan base. By January 1997, they had released their full-length debut, Welcome to Popopia, which included some noteworthy guitar playing from Tammy Lynn. Influenced by such guitar greats as Scotty Moore, Johnny Cash, Ace Frehley, and Jimmy Page, Lynn is a solid guitar player in her own right, often coming up with memorable and melodic guitar solos.

Review by popphil

Upbeat, sunny powerpop, strongly reminiscent of Jellyfish.
This record was originally released in 1997 but prefer the 1998 Japan-only reissue as it includes three bonus tracks, among which a magnificent cover of 10cc's 'The Things We Do For Love'.
Too bad this Seattle band remains a one-album group as of 2011, even though their Myspace page is still extant...

THE SPENT POETS The Spent Poets 1992

contributed by Valium & Cheesecake

Artist Biography

by Stewart Mason

From their name on down, the San Francisco-based Spent Poets flirted with pretension at every move. Lead singer Adam Gates' lyrics dropped references both literary and pop-cultural (Virginia Woolf and other suicidal female writers, the Beatles, and Syd Barrett were particular obsessions), and the group's lavish version of neo-psychedelia includes spoken interludes, found sounds, tape-effect extravaganzas, and exotic, sometimes bizarre instrumentation. Yet the wit and melodic invention of the group's sole album keeps the group from tipping over into preciousness...usually.

The core of the Spent Poets formed in San Francisco in 1988 when Gates and multi-instrumentalist Matt Winegar began making homemade tapes in Winegar's living room. These tapes found their way to the duo's friend Matt Wallace, a local producer (Faith No More, Yo, etc.), who began working with the duo in 1990 and suggested they put together a full band for live performances. Gates and Winegar recruited keyboardist John Berg, bassist Derek Greenberg, and drummer Michael Urbano and began playing the local circuit, eventually signing with Geffen Records in 1991. The group's Wallace-produced album was recorded over the course of several months that year and released in early 1992. Although the Spent Poets were generally well-received critically, its ornate, lush, and trippy sound stuck out in the first flowering of grunge like Ravi Shankar in a mosh pit, and sales were minimal. A reconfigured version of the band (Gates, Winegar, and Greenberg) recorded a follow-up album in 1993, but Geffen declined to release it, and the band split up that summer.

Artist Biography

by Mike DaRonco

Heavily inspired by The Ramones and The Descendants, The Connie Dungs wanted to bring out their own brand of "obnoxiously happy" pop-punk to their suburban hood known as Ashland, KY. Consisting of Brandon Dungs (vocals), Wayne Sphincter (bass), Chris Colostomy (drums) and Robbie Rectum (guitarist) immediately pumped out the releases not too long after their formation in early 1995. After two demos, a split with Tugboat and an EP on Harmless Records entitled "Missy and Johnny," Mutant Pop Recordings hooked them up to release 1996's "I Hate This Town" followed by the "No Chance" EP a year later. After three more split releases with Slow Poles, Operation: Cliff Calvin and The Automatics, The Connie Dungs first full-length "Driving on Neptune" finally arrived on Mutant Pop in 1998. The following year after the boot of guitarist Robbie Rectum, Dave Berger (formely of Spodie) took over the axe man duties and without even allowing a creative breather, their follow up album "Earthbound for the Holiday" came out the year after.

Artist Biography

by Mike DaRonco

Upon their 1998 formation, 20 Minute Loop have maintained their gender-mixed trademark of uppity hooks and new wave beats to their native of San Francisco. Resulting in their self-proclaimed sound of "freak-pop," the quintet of Kelly Atkins (vocals/keyboards), Greg Giles (guitar/vocals), Joe Ostrowski (guitar), Dan Jones (bass), and Ethan Turner (drums) brought on an added inspiration of X, the Pixies, Pavement, and PJ Harvey. By 1999, 20 Minute Loop signed to Fortune Records and released their self-titled debut album the following year.

BACKWATER Angels Are Cool 1996

Discogs

Artist Biography

by AllMusic

The roots of Backwater lie as far back as 1990, when Barry Peak (b. 7 June 1974, Belfast, Northern Ireland; guitar/vocals) and Boyd Lowe (b. 1974, Belfast, Northern Ireland; guitar/vocals), began playing punk rock with a now-forgotten rhythm section. After several years they settled down with Ryan McAuley (b. 4 October 1972, Belfast, Northern Ireland; bass) and Richard Bassett (drums). They began to get media attention at about the same time as Ash and lazy hacks tended to lump them together as some sort of ‘Ulsterpunk’ phenomenon. Backwater, however, lacked their contemporaries’ glam pop sensibilities, relying instead upon the contrast between the songwriters’ respective styles: Peak’s hazy, stream-of-consciousness tableaux, where lyrics followed the music; and Lowe’s splenetic Fall -esque noise, written the other way round. The band’s first two singles, Lowe’s ‘Didactic No’ and Peak’s ‘Supercool’, achieved airplay from John Peel and Mark Radcliffe; support slots with the likes of Urusei Yatsura, Sebadoh and, bizarrely, Def Leppard followed. In 1995 they recorded their debut album for Ché Records but it was not released until over a year later, by which time Bassett, sick of touring, had been replaced by Shaun Robinson (b. 8 April 1974, Belfast, Northern Ireland). More significantly, shortly after Angels Are Cool saw the light of day, Lowe left the band, returning to his first love, painting. Backwater continued as a trio for a short time before calling it a day. Peak, McAuley and Robinson later worked together in Torgas Valley Reds.

SACRIFICE ISAAC Tough Row To Hoe 1995

Discogs

Artist Biography

by Mike DaRonco

Formed in 1995 when drummer Mark Coffin relocated from California to Kansas City, MO, and started a collaboration with bassist Carl Newberry, and brothers WC (vocals) and Paul Mitchell (guitar). Sharing the influences of Tool, Janes Addiction, Quicksand, and their own abrasive energy, the band soon started playing all around the Mid-West and even having the chance to share the stage with the likes of Tripping Daisy, Tenderloin, and the Nixons, among others. After the release of their first album Tough Row to Hoe in 1995, Sacrifice Isaac took a sudden year hiatus on the count of trying to find a replacement bass player whom they could click with. It wasn't until Gene Abramov came about in 1996, the band was reinstated back on the Mid-Western scene and released their 1999 follow-up on Slipdisc entitled Migraine.
