Come Recline Review

by Jack Rabid

One of the funniest records released this year. Remember the CIRCLE JERKS dressed as lounge entertainers, crooning an insipid Borscht-Belt version of "When the Shit Hits the Fan," in the '83 movie Repo Man? And the punk at the table says, "Damn, I used to like these guys." Well New York City tuxedo trio BVF obviously got the joke. Here they cover some of the angriest late '70s/early '80's L.A. hardcore songs as if Esquivel wrote them for Dean Martin. In addition to the Circle Jerks' "Group Sex," classics by BLACK FLAG ("Wasted," "No Values"), ADOLESCENTS ("Amoeba), GERMS ("Media Blitz"), FEAR ("I Don't Care About You"), T.S.O.L. ("Code Blue"), SUICIDAL TENDENCIES ("I Shot JFK," "Institutionalized"), and THE MONKEES ("Stepping Stone," by way of the SEX PISTOLS, S.O.A., and MINOR THREAT) are all covered in a variety of cocktail jazz/bossanova/Latin styles that suggests lamé suits, smaltz, and Trini Lopez. The seething, pithy lyrics sound hysterically funny this way, and this "live at CBGB" LP is further augmented by witty stage patter, and spot-on sendups of the talking parts on the Decline of the Western Civilization, Vol. I soundtrack LP. That film, which largely brought the original bands to public attention, is further lampooned via the LP title and the hilarious cover shot parody of the Germs' DARBY CRASH comatose on the floor. Have a martini, and mellow out while you hate your hypocritical parents and staid society, maaaannn.

Dave Wakeling Biography

by Mark Deming

With a knack for taut rhythms and tasty pop hooks, Dave Wakeling is a British-born singer, guitarist, and songwriter who enjoyed international success with the groups the Beat (aka the English Beat) and General Public. Formed in 1978, the Beat were one of the best and most influential acts to emerge from the U.K. ska revival, and their 1980 album I Just Can't Stop It is widely regarded as a masterpiece. After adding more pop elements into the Beat's sound, they began gaining a foothold in the American market with 1982's Special Beat Service, which spawned two popular MTV videos, "I Confess" and "Save It for Later." The Beat broke up in 1983, and in 1984 Wakeling debuted his next project, General Public, who scored a Top 40 hit with the song "Tenderness." After General Public dissolved in 1987, Wakeling moved to California and went solo, writing the title song for the movie She's Having a Baby and releasing the album No Warning in 1991. Throughout much of the '90s, music took a back seat for Wakeling as he focused on his family and working with the environmental group Greenpeace. But in the 2000s, he assembled a new version of the English Beat, regularly touring in North America and releasing a new album, Here We Go Love, in 2018.

Crowd Repellent Review

by Steve Huey

Unsurprisingly, the Hellworms' debut album Crowd Repellent bears more than a passing resemblance to Ralph Spight and Larry Boothroyd's previous projects, Victim's Family and Saturn's Flea Collar, and especially to the former. That's not necessarily a bad thing, of course, particularly for fans of their style and humor, since their musicianship has continued to grow tighter over time.

VICTIMS FAMILY The Germ 1992

Victim's Family Biography

by Greg Prato

The Santa Rosa, CA, outfit Victim's Family formed in 1984 (the original lineup consisted of guitarist/vocalist Ralph Spight, bassist Larry Boothroyd, and drummer Devon VrMeer), and since its inception, the trio has refused to be pigeonholed to any single musical style -- incorporating elements of hardcore punk, jazz, funk, hard rock, and noise into its challenging sound. After signing to the independent Mordam Records in the mid-'80s (a label which included another hard-to-categorize act, Faith No More), the group issued three albums -- the 1986 debut Voltage & Violets, 1989's Things I Hate to Admit, and 1990's White Bread Blues (the latter produced by No Means No drummer John Wright). Soon after, they signed on to the Dead Kennedy's record company, Alternative Tentacles. 1992 saw the first release for their new label, The Germ, but just as underground and alternative rock were finally hitting the big time, Victim's Family decided to go on hiatus.

The break proved to be a short one, as they returned in 1994 with Headache Remedy, following it up a year later with the live EP Four Great Thrash Songs. But once again, the group decided to go their separate ways. Upon returning to California, Boothroyd formed a new group, Saturn's Flea Collar (which also included Spight), issuing a single and an album (1997's Monosyllabic), before the band mutated into another group, Hellworms, which also issued a single and a full-length album, 1998's Crowd Repellent. Soon after, Boothroyd and Spight decided to activate Victim's Family once more, enlisting former My Name drummer David Gleza into their ranks, which resulted in the release of the group's first new release in six years, Apocalicious, in September of 2001.

SATURN'S FLEA COLLAR Monosyllabic 1996

Discogs

Alternative Tentacles

Saturn’s Flea Collar is not just another band! They are the rootinest, tootinest, insecticide whiffin’, extra-terrestrial feline power trio to disinfect the fetid, festering “X Generation” music thang. Born outta the ashes of Victims Family, Larry and Ralf decided to hook up with some guy named Jason and mix up a musical concoction that stuns and amazes. Knowing that words cannot describe sounds, Alternative Tentacles will now attempt the impossible…

Saturn’s Flea Collar’s debut full-length, Monosyllabic, is an exotic melange of furry shorts, catch phrases, buzz words, tape loops, blistering volume, too many notes and way too many effects. before you know it, you’ll be singin’ along to these musical gems about everyday occurrences that never happen and jingles for products that don’t exist. Let’s just say SFC are like a flea bomb, stinkin’ up the house of rock (overrun with jangly, whining parasites on it’s furry hindquarters like a gnat on the back of the working class peoples – hallalooya brothers and sisters!). With songs like, “Don’t Fuck With The Guy Who Makes Your Food,” “The Gas Bill And Love,” it’s a straightedge psychedelic nightmare!

Take the weirdest Victims Family had to offer, puree, gently fold in a yolk, stretch to activate and voila! You’ve got an effective floor wax and a dessert topping in one! SFC truly deliver the goods for dissatisfied 21st-century lifestyle consumers!

The Lune Biography

by Jason Ankeny

Roots music-inspired experimental trio the Lune originally comprised Jeff Goddard, Brad White and Mark Romano. The group kept a relatively low profile for much of the 1990s, fine-tuning their idiosyncratic take on jazz and blues over a series of indie-label singles, including a split release with bassist Goddard's other band, Karate. Finally, in 1998 the Lune issued a full-length LP, On the Cutting Room Floor, on Aesthetics Records; an EP, Sill, appeared that same year. Goddard soon left the group, and White and Romano continued as a duo.

California Police State Review

by Adam Bregman

On their acid rock masterpiece California Police State, Ventura, CA's Sexy Death Soda invoke a diesel-fueled, '70s-style sound and pull it off as well as any of the retro acts attempting to replicate that era. Blending a wide variety of influences from surfy pop to drug-addled art rock, they succeed at conquering all of them. The tunes, which have a bit of an ironic bent, have titles and sorts of themes which go along with the bands' stream-of-consciousness ramblings such as "November Reign," the title of which is a slight parody of Guns N' Roses' "November Rain," and the title song "California Police State," a breezy tribute to the Golden State partially inspired by some collage art from the Dead Kennedys' classic Fresh Fruit for Rotten Vegetables. The lyrics are hilarious gobbledy-gook about naked ladies, whiskey, and other such nonsense. In fact, every song on California Police State sounds like it should be blasting from a diner jukebox, though a few of these tunes might upset the customers.

MIKE VIOLA AND THE CANDY BUTCHERS Falling Into Place 1999

Falling into Place Review

by William Ruhlmann

In the mid-'70s, British singer/songwriters like Graham Parker and Elvis Costello launched careers with music that tempered the onslaught of punk to a more melodic rock sound reminiscent of mid-'60s Beatles music and its many followers, and, while retaining punk's lyrical anguish, explored more complex emotions with more eloquent words. On his debut album, Mike Viola, whose voice most people heard for the first time singing "That Thing You Do!" in the movie of the same name, resurrects the sound of Parker & the Rumour's Howlin' Wind and Costello & the Attractions' This Year's Model, fronting the rhythm section known as the Candy Butchers, with occasional added keyboards by the Band's Garth Hudson. Viola's rough voice has much of Parker's urgency to it, and his songs, less substantial than those of Costello, are nevertheless concerned with many of the same elements of romantic disappointment and its attendant frustration. Indeed, he seems to be rewriting the same song over and over: "All day I'm thinking about you, " he sings in "Give Me Some Time," and "You are always on my mind" in "Can't We Do Anything Right," a title followed one song later by "Doing It the Wrong Way." One song is called "Falling into Place," another "Falling Back Down." Viola's music for these confused and ambivalent sentiments is raucously played by the Candy Butchers, and occasional horn and string charts add grace without robbing the tunes of bite. Mixer Bob Clearmountain has given the album an explosive sound in which every instrument seems simultaneously very loud and distinct. Chip-on-the-shoulder sensitivity is a good combination of feelings in the ever-adolescent world of rock & roll, and it works as well for Viola on this debut album as it has for others in the past. The next question is whether, like Elvis Costello, he'll evolve out of it or, like Graham Parker, keep repeating it.
