SubArachnoid Space Biography
by Jason Ankeny
The neo-psychedelic improvisational unit SubArachnoid Space formed in San Francisco in late 1995. Originally comprised of guitarist Mason Jones, bassist Jason Stein, and drummer Michelle Schreibner, they debuted early the following year with the single "Char-Broiled Wonderland," welcoming second guitarist Melynda Jackson shortly after the record's release. The full-length Delicate Membrane followed later in 1996, with Ether Or appearing in the early months of 1997. After the release of Almost Invisible (also 1997), Stein exited and was replaced by bassist Andey Stephens. Endless Renovation followed in 1998, and a year later the group resurfaced with Sleeping Sickness and issued These Things Take Time in fall 2000. As the decade wore on, the sound of the band's releases increased in heaviness. Though not as prolific as they once were, they did issue Also Rising in 2003 and The Red Veil in 2005. By the time the band recorded 2009's Eight Bells, its lineup featured Jackson, Daniel Barone (bass), Lauren K. Newman (drums), and Daniel Osborne (guitar).
