For a label that normally puts out either blazing power-violence or ultra-torturing sludge-core, Ancient Chinese Secret is a definite stand-out for Slap-a-Ham's entire back catalog. There are a couple reasons for this: for one, the minimal line-up consists of Spazz's Chris Dodge on bass, his wife Lydia on vocals and a drummer completing the line up, that's it. Second of all, there's not once ounce of metal or a trace of heaviness for that matter. Rather, ACS has more of an off-beat, quirky but non-threatening appeal to them. This is in part thanks to the lack of distortion and Lydia's ability to talk loudly into the mic rather than scream at the top of her lungs. Not to say that Caveat Emptor is bad or anything; on top of all this, the occasional tape loop samples -with the last track mixing a slew of cartoon sound effects-and speed metal drumming give this album its own uniqueness. Playful, but not to the point of being wholesome family entertainment.

With a fair amount of the Shrimper Inland Empire
scene appearing somewhere on this entertaining record -- guests include
such stalwarts as Peter Hughes and co-producer Bob Durkee -- the merry
five-piece that is, or rather was, Big Breakfast comes up with an album
that defies many '90s indie stereotypes. The sound is crisp, not
restrained or fuzzy, the playing sharp, and the end result is a nicely
aggro treat that's as friendly as it is forceful, much more a product of
various '80s new wave/alt roots than the era of home tape recordings.
Lisa Kuta is a perfect frontwoman for the whole thing, with lyrics that
are guardedly emotional and sung that way -- warm but wary and all the
more striking for it, not afraid to let go a bit here and there. The
rhythm section of Steve Cronk and Chris Damore works especially well,
dictating the feel of the songs along with Kuta more than anything else.
Elsewhere, as Kuta sings at one point, "His solos are never crap/I have
a friend named Kevin Trapp." Indeed, besides his wry, not-quite-there
singing style, Trapp pulls off some great guitar work, steering well
away from post-grunge sludge in favor of far more intriguing gods like
the Go-Betweens and New Order as templates. When he does fire up the
feedback, he only does so for just enough impact. Add in Bill
Magdriagz's keyboards for extra dollops of sound (check his fun melody
on "Continuation High School Love Affair") and all is very well. Other
highlights: the soaring statement of intent that is "Googlephonics," the
merry "J. Curve," and the very in-joke-worthy "El Slobbo de Mosso."
There are also some state-of-the-art '90s pop-culture references very
intentionally played for laughs, thus the introductory lyrics of
"Primordial Maracas" as sung by Trapp: "Me llamo Cornholio/I need TP for
my bunghole."

Manifesto was an American rock band from Washington, D.C., United
States, featuring Michael Hampton (vocals, guitar, drum programming),
Bert Queiroz (bass) and Ivor Hanson (drums). It was formed in 1988 after
the demise of Hampton's previous short-lived bands, Embrace and One
Last Wish. The trio's recording debut was the 7-inch single "Burn",
released in 1988 on Skip Groff's Y&T Records. In 1992, they released
their self-titled and only studio album through British independent
record label Fire Records. The following year, shortly after their album
was released in the United States, Manifesto disbanded.
In contrast to the hardcore punk–indebted sound of Hampton's
previous bands, Manifesto features a poppier sound, taking influences
from guitar and jangle pop groups of the 1980s. As a result, the band
worked with producer John A. Rivers, who produced for various British
guitar pop bands such as Close Lobsters and the Pastels, on its debut
album.

The Extra Lens, formerly known as The Extra Glenns, are a band made up of Franklin Bruno of Nothing Painted Blue and John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats. They were something of an underground legend in the '90s, recording tracks for singles and some compilations. Both artists however started concentrating on their own solo work, though as their popularity grew they continued to work together when possible. A show at the 2000 San Francisco Noise Pop Festival found an unexpected crowd in attendance with exceeding interest with fans coming from as far away as New York just for the band. They decided then that it was a good idea to keep it going and in 2002 Absolutely Kosher Records released Martial Arts Weekend, the group's first full length album.

Retro-rockabilly maniacs Flat Duo Jets paired singer/guitarist Dexter Romweber and drummer Chris "Crow" Smith; though based throughout much of their career in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the duo first gained widespread exposure appearing live in the 1986 music documentary Athens, GA: Inside/Out. Despite critical acclaim, they did not issue their self-titled debut LP until 1990, resurfacing a year later with Go Go Harlem Baby. Indie label stalwarts throughout the course of records including 1992's In Stereo, 1993's White Trees, and 1996's Red Tango, Flat Duo Jets finally signed to major label Outpost to release Lucky Eye in 1998; however, the group disbanded the following year. Two Headed Cow, a live soundtrack to the Dexter Romweber/Flat Duo Jets documentary of the same name, was released in 2008, nearly ten years after the band broke up.
