FLAT DUO JETS Flat Duo Jets 1989

Flat Duo Jets Biography

by Jason Ankeny

Retro-rockabilly maniacs Flat Duo Jets paired singer/guitarist Dexter Romweber and drummer Chris "Crow" Smith; though based throughout much of their career in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the duo first gained widespread exposure appearing live in the 1986 music documentary Athens, GA: Inside/Out. Despite critical acclaim, they did not issue their self-titled debut LP until 1990, resurfacing a year later with Go Go Harlem Baby. Indie label stalwarts throughout the course of records including 1992's In Stereo, 1993's White Trees, and 1996's Red Tango, Flat Duo Jets finally signed to major label Outpost to release Lucky Eye in 1998; however, the group disbanded the following year. Two Headed Cow, a live soundtrack to the Dexter Romweber/Flat Duo Jets documentary of the same name, was released in 2008, nearly ten years after the band broke up.

The Afghan Whigs Biography

by Mark Deming

Beginning as a raw, garage-influenced rock band in the mold of the Replacements, Dinosaur Jr., and Mudhoney, the Afghan Whigs matured into a literate, moody, soul-inflected post-punk quartet who became one of the most critically acclaimed alternative bands of the 1990s. Singer, songwriter, and group leader Greg Dulli's songs were vivid stories of broken relationships and toxic masculinity accompanied by taut, R&B-influenced guitar rock, especially on 1992's Congregation and 1993's Gentlemen. The band upped the grooves while toning down the darker lyrical themes on 1998's 1965, their last LP before they disbanded in 2001. Dulli reunited the Whigs for live work in 2012, and with a rotating cast of accompanists, he took the group back to the studio for new projects, including the dark, densely arranged Do to the Beast (2014) and the more straightforward, guitar-based How Do You Burn? (2022).

XTC The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead EP 1992

CD EP release with songs from Nonsuch including 2 demos.

Formed in Swindon UK from the ashes of the band The Helium Kidz and were active from 1975 to 2006.
They were a musically adventurous group who first made an impact as a post-punk new wave band but refused to be pigeonholed by recording dub, folk-rock, psychedelia and pure pop as the mood took them.
The classic line-up was Andy Partridge (guitar & vocals), Colin Moulding (bass & vocals), Dave Gregory (guitar & keyboards, left in 1999) and Terry Chambers (drums, left in 1982).
Barry Andrews was the original keyboard player but he left in 1979 to be replaced by Dave Gregory. The band ceased performing live in 1982, prompting Terry to leave and, rather than replacing him, they then used various session drummers for their remaining studio albums.
Their live legacy continues through Terry's band EXTC (2).

MERCURY REV Everlasting Arm EP 1994

Mercury Rev - Everlasting Arm EP
1. Everlasting Arm (Mercury Rev) [5:27]
2. Deadman (Alan Vega/traditional arrangement by Donahue, Mackowiak) [34:36]

Here's a blurb from the inner sleeve: So it came to pass that Mercury Rev, already working on a track for an upcoming Suicide (former band of Alan Vega's in the 80's) tribute album, suggested a collaboration. Vega offered a reading of "Deadman", a piece he'd written for a book of prose and verse that he was about to publish under Henry Rollins' 2.13.61 imprint. Mercury Rev took "Deadman" home and scored it with a traditional tune borrowed, they claim, from an old Bessie Smith record.

Idaho is a rock band formed in 1991 in Los Angeles, California, founded as a duo by high school friends Jeff Martin and John K. Berry. They were signed to Caroline Records in December 1992 by Brian Long, then released the The Palms EP and Year After Year full-length in 1993. Idaho drew frequent comparisons to American Music Club and Red House Painters due to vocal, lyrical, and instrumental similarities. Idaho toured the U.S. with similar-minded artists like Red House Painters, Half String, Low, and Cranes in 1993-1995.
Martin has recently done music for U.S. television shows.

THE RAILWAY CHILDREN Native Place 1990

.

Artist Biography by

Reunion Wilderness
Consisting of vocalist Gary Newby, Brian Bateman, Guy Keegan, and Stephen Hull, the Railway Children gained a small cult following in their native England in the late '80s. When the members were still teenagers, the group began releasing singles on Factory Records. Recalling the intricate guitar pop of the Smiths, their singles evoked the ringing hooks of '60s British pop and the post-punk pop attitude of the '80s. The band released their debut album, Reunion Wilderness, in 1987; the album led to a contract with Virgin Records. Railway Children's second album, Recurrence (1988), smoothed out the rougher edges of their early independent records, leading to several minor hit singles. Released in 1990, Native Place captured the band in a transitional phase, as they were incorporating dance elements into their sound. In 1992, while working on their fourth album, Dream Arcade, EMI took over their label, Virgin Records. The band left the label and by 1994, Bateman and Hull quit, leaving the band in limbo. Newby continued on, finally completing Dream Arcade in the spring of 1999 with a new lineup.

NORTHSIDE Chicken Rhythms 1991

Northside are a band from Moston, Manchester, England, that borrowed heavily from the Madchester scene of the time. Formed in 1989, they released their only album Chicken Rhythms on Factory Records in 1991. The band became known for their live shows as part of what was the 1990 indie-rave scene. Their style was more to do with The Charlatans, as opposed The Stone Roses.
