AllMusic Review by John Bush

Menthol play a pleasing brand of alternative power-pop with influence from The Pixies and Sonic Youth. Guitarist Balthazar de Ley and bassist Joel Spencer's harmonizing vocals are particularly emotional.

BLACK LAB Your Body Above Me 1997

From new I Hate the 90s contributor Keith. Thanks Keith!

Artist Biography by

The alternative rock combo Black Lab originally formed in the Bay Area in 1995 around vocalist Paul Durham, bassist Geoff Stanfield, guitarist Michael Belfer, and drummer Bryan Head. Named Black Lab, the quartet began getting rave reviews around San Francisco and signed to Geffen Records in 1996. In October 1997 the band released their debut album, Your Body Above Me. Time Ago followed a year later, but the band broke up in 1999. Signed by Epic in 2000, Durham started a new chapter for Black Lab, collaborating with guitarist/programmer Andy Ellis. They placed a track on the Spider-Man soundtrack, but ended up leaving Epic before the release of their second album, See the Sun, which was eventually self-released in 2005. They also appeared on the soundtracks for Varsity Blues, The Shield, Blade Trinity, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The duo released Passion Leaves a Trace in early 2007. A pair of B-sides collections followed (Technologie, Give Us Sugar), then in 2010, the studio follow-up Two Strangers appeared.

CHRIS MARS 75% Less Fat 1993

Artist Biography by

All Shook Down
While he would eventually push music aside for painting, Chris Mars would always be best known for his first artistic endeavor, that of being the drummer for the legendary Minneapolis, MN rock band the Replacements. As the Replacements' star rose proportionally with frontman Paul Westerberg's control of the band, Mars found himself further and further alienated from Westerberg, and he made only brief appearances on the group's final outing, All Shook Down. Before the band could tour to promote the record, Mars quit, and joined up with Minneapolis
Horseshoes & Hand Grenades
"super-group" Golden Smog and spent more time focusing on his painting. In 1992, he released his first solo record, a mostly self-made affair -- he not only drummed, but sang and played keyboards and guitars, as well as being the chief songwriter. Titled Horseshoes & Hand Grenades, the LP also included bassist J.D. Foster and featured Dave Pirner and Dan Murphy from Soul Asylum. Mars' follow-up, 75% Less Fat, released in 1993, featured only himself and Foster, and showed his first attempt at moving away from straightforward rock stylings. His final album, 1995's Tenterhooks, would confirm his intention to move away from rock, mixing jazz, rap, and disco into the mix. He chose not to tour the album, so Syracuse band the Wallmen decided to tour it for him, covering the songs, with a cardboard cutout of Mars standing center-stage. After Tenterhooks, Mars would devote himself full-time to his painting which, inspired by his older brother's schizophrenia, focused on disturbing landscapes and even more disturbing figures and portraits. These images first got showings on his solo records, but would eventually feature in solo exhibitions all over North America. Even though Mars put music aside for his brand of visual art -- he wouldn't even mention music in interviews -- he got together with former Replacements' bandmates Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson in 2005 to record -- vocals only, no drums -- two new tracks for an anthology of the band's work.

BATTERSHELL Sunshine in Popopia 1996

Discogs

Artist Biography by

According to Battershell singer/guitarist Tammy Lynn, their sound is a combination of country lyrics with punk music. While this may not be entirely true, the trio (which also includes Jamie R. Baker on bass and vocals, and Charlie Lauth on drums) creates a sound similar to Veruca Salt, but is more challenging and unpredictable. Formed in the mid-'90s in New York City, the band began rehearsing and playing; soon Ng Records became interested in their sweet alterna-pop, and signed the band in 1995. After the release of the EP Beautiful Princess of Spit in the same year, the group began touring the nation (including an appearance at the popular Foundations Forum showcase in 1996) and building their fan base. By January 1997, they had released their full-length debut, Welcome to Popopia, which included some noteworthy guitar playing from Tammy Lynn. Influenced by such guitar greats as Scotty Moore, Johnny Cash, Ace Frehley, and Jimmy Page, Lynn is a solid guitar player in her own right, often coming up with memorable and melodic guitar solos.
