THE JODY GRIND One Man's Trash (Is Another Man's Treasure) 1990

Discogs

Artist Biography by

Before there was a Cocktail Nation and a mania for retro lounge music, Atlanta's Jody Grind were turning out jazzy renditions of Gershwin, Bacharach and Dusty Springfield numbers, country & western standards and original rock songs that hybridized those forms with alternative music. Singer Kelly Hogan distinguished the band (Bill Taft; guitars, Walter Brewer; drums and Robert Hayes; bass) from any number of alternative groups, as she was a real singer and used her beautiful voice to great effect. Long an Atlanta scene favorite, in 1990 DB Records released One Man's Trash is Another Man's Treasure. Followed by the more experimental Lefty's Deceiver, the band's career was cut short following a car accident which killed two members. Hogan continues to perform as a solo act in Atlanta and has released one record.

LILYS In the Presence of Nothing 1992

Artist Biography by

In the Presence of Nothing
The geographically and stylistically nomadic indie rock band Lilys was the vehicle of singer/songwriter Kurt Heasley, the group's founder and sole constant member. A Philadelphia native, Heasley and Lilys bowed with the 1991 single "February 14," a nod to My Bloody Valentine; while based in Washington, D.C., they recorded their 1992 debut LP, In the Presence of Nothing, an even greater testament to their shoegazing fetish. A two-year silence followed as Heasley roamed the East Coast, finally resurfacing with 1994's A Brief History of Amazing Letdowns EP, on which Lilys refashioned themselves as a guitar pop band. The spare, minimalist Eccsame the Photon Band followed in 1995 before the now Boston-based Heasley delivered the next year's Better Can't Make Your Life Better, evidence of a strong British Invasion fixation.
Services (For the Soon to Be Departed) [ep]
The Services (For the Soon to Be Departed) EP arrived in 1997; two years later, Lilys resurfaced not only with the full-length The 3-Way but also Zero Population Growth, their entry in Darla Records' continuing Bliss Out series. Around this time, Heasley returned to Philadelphia to focus on raising his family. In fall 2002, he began recording his seventh album. Produced by Mike Mussmano, Precollection highlighted Lilys' brightest, anthemic pop sound yet. It was issued in spring 2003, their first release for Manifesto. Two years later, Heasley joined Mussmano a second time for Everything Wrong Is Imaginary.

LIT Tripping the Light Fantastic 1997

Artist Biography by

Tripping the Light Fantastic
A major player throughout the post-grunge boom of the late '90s, Lit featured the combined talents of frontman A. Jay Popoff, his guitar-playing brother Jeremy, bassist Kevin Baldes, and drummer Allen Shellenberger. The group formed in 1990 in Orange County, California, where it initially performed metal-influenced music under the name Razzle. After changing their name, Lit began embracing a spunky brand of punk-pop that helped attract a local following in California. The group sold out local venues (including Club 369 in Fullerton) and issued two recordings: an EP, Five Smokin' Tracks from Lit; and the full-length Tripping the Light Fantastic, which arrived during the spring of 1997 and became a college radio hit.
A Place in the Sun
Lit then landed a contract with RCA Records, which released the follow-up effort A Place in the Sun two years later. This proved to be Lit's breakthrough record, as the catchy rock riffs of "My Own Worst Enemy," "Zip-Lock," and "Miserable" all paved the way for platinum sales. With "My Own Worst Enemy" topping the U.S. Modern Rock Tracks chart, Lit toured the country alongside groups like the Offspring, No Doubt, and Garbage. Furthermore, they performed a set at Woodstock 1999 and earned a spot on the 2000 Vans Warped Tour.
Atomic
A third album, Atomic, was released in fall 2001, spawning several singles including "Lipstick and Bruises." A self-titled album arrived in 2004, marking Lit's fourth full-length effort (as well as their first release on the Nitrus label). In 2008, drummer Shellenberger was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He died on August 13, 2009 at the age of 39. Nathan Walker was added as the band's drummer and Lit began work on new material. In 2012, Lit released their fifth studio album, the Butch Walker-produced The View from the Bottom. They dedicated the album to Shellenberger.

BEWITCHED Brain Eraser 1990

by request

Artist Biography by

Bewitched, formed by former Sonic Youth drummer Bob Bert, sprang from rather tongue-in-cheek origins. While on tour in the UK, Sonic Youth leader Thurston Moore told the press that Bob Bert had started an interesting new group. However, the truth of the matter was that Bert, who had recently completed a stint as drummer for Pussy Galore, was pretty much doing nothing. Nevertheless, Moore's joking comment created a minor buzz and prompted Paul Smith of the English record label Blast First to offer to release the group's first record. Bert decided to taek advantage of the offer and promptly put together a noise collage effort that repelled Smith so much that he decided to take back the offer.
Not to be discouraged, Bert put out the EP himself and, following the release, put together an actual band under the Bewitched moniker. The initial lineup was guitarist Jim Fu, bassist Chris Ward and turntable man Dave P. That lineup played on the group's first full-length album, 1990's Brain Eraser, which featured drum machine, Fu's experimental noise stylings and Bert's deadpan, chanted vocals. Bert recruited producer Steve Albini (Nirvana, P.J. Harvey) for the album Harshing My Mellow. That release saw the departure of guitarist Jim Fu. He was replaced by Art Reinitz, who brought a more straight-up rock sound to the proceedings. Bert's biting wit was in full bloom on 1991's Harshing My Mellow, particularly on the mainstream-rock parody "No. 1," wherein Bert imagines himself in the company of such big time rock stars as Michael Stipe (referred to here as "Mikey") and Axl Rose.
