Salt Biography

Salt is a trio hailing from Sweden consisting of singer/songwriter/guitarist Nina Ramsby, bassist Daniel Ewerman, and drummer Jim Tegman. The band grew out of an informal jamming circle amongst friends who attended art school together and encompassed as many as six members at a time. The current lineup has been playing together since 1992. Ramsby had some training on piano, clarinet, and saxophone, but rejected orchestral music in favor of the guitar. She writes lyrics in English rather than Swedish because she finds it a more melodic, potentially obscure and poetic language. Salt's debut, Auscultate, was released in 1995. Delay Me Down and Make Me Wah-Wah followed in 1997.

A jangly Southern power pop band in the classic mold, Atlanta-based Uncle Green featured vocalists/guitarists/songwriters Matt Brown and Jeff Jensen, bassist Bill Decker, and drummer Pete McDade. Naturally, Uncle Green looked to R.E.M. as a chief influence, but also drew from less elliptical power pop influences both classic (the Beatles, Squeeze) and contemporary (Trip Shakespeare, the Posies, Matthew Sweet). Formed when some of its members were just 15, Uncle Green debuted with two albums for the small New Vision label (1987's Get It Together and 1988's 15 Dryden), but didn't truly hit their stride until signing with the indie DB. Produced by Brendan O'Brien, 1989's You was a major step forward, finding Brown and Jensen both perfecting their voices as lyricists and their senses of craft and structure as tunesmiths. 1991's What an Experiment His Head Was further refined the group's sound and helped them land a major-label deal with Atlantic. With O'Brien again at the helm, Uncle Green recorded Book of Bad Thoughts, their hardest-rocking -- and, some said, best -- album yet. Unfortunately, despite radio's greater receptivity to Uncle Green's style of music, the record failed to catch on with a wider alternative audience; after Atlantic ditched them, the group wound up disbanding in 1994. However, they immediately regrouped -- with the exact same lineup -- as the slightly more alt-rock-sounding 3 Lb. Thrill; they signed to O'Brien's Sony subsidiary 57 and recorded one album, Vulture, in 1995.

Oleander Biography by Jason Ankeny

An alternative pop band from Sacramento, CA, Oleander enjoyed a brief flash of popularity in 1999, when the singles "Why I'm Here" and "I Walk Alone" found a home on mainstream rock radio. The band was originally formed in 1995 by singer/guitarist Thomas Flowers, guitarist Ric Ivanisevich, bassist Doug Eldridge, and drummer Fred Nelson, Jr. Named for the poisonous wildflowers growing throughout the Northern California region, Oleander made their studio debut in 1996 with a self-titled EP; a full-length album, Shrinking the Blob, followed in mid-1997. The latter record launched a local hit with "Down When I'm Loaded," and Oleander parlayed that success into a major-label deal with Universal.

February Son arrived in 1999, sporting the two aforementioned singles as well as a new drummer, Scott Devours. February Son reached gold status by mid-2000, and the band's experimental follow-up effort, Unwind, spawned a Top 40 hit ("Champion") in 2001. Unwind failed to gain much traction beyond its one single, however, and Oleander were soon sent packing from the Universal label. Signing with Sanctuary Records instead, they issued Joyride in 2003 and received a strong review from Rolling Stone magazine. The album didn't return Oleander to national popularity, however, and the musicians soon began pursuing different projects, effectively breaking up the band in 2004.

An unlikely but powerful combination of punk fury and prog rock ambition, ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead were formed in late 1994 by singers/guitarists/drummers Jason Reece and Conrad Keely. The longtime friends originally met in Hawaii before settling in the indie hotbed of Olympia, Washington, where Reece drummed for the notorious Mukilteo Fairies. After relocating together to Austin, Texas, the duo began playing shows as "You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead," eventually adding both the conjunction and the ellipsis to the band's name. The pair also recruited guitarist Kevin Allen and bassist/sampler Neil Busch, thus transforming the group from an indie two-piece into an arty quartet. After issuing a live cassette on the local Golden Hour label, AYWKUBTTOD -- already legendary in indie circles for their anarchic concert sets -- released their self-titled full-length debut on Trance Syndicate in early 1998. Following the label's collapse, the band moved to Merge's roster and issued Madonna in the fall of 1999.

After signing yet another record deal with Interscope, they issued the formidable Source Tags & Codes in 2002, followed by The Secret of Elena's Tomb EP in 2003. The elaborate Worlds Apart arrived early in 2005. Despite widespread acclaim for the album, its sales were disappointing, leading Keely to consider disbanding the group. However, he and the rest of AYWKUBTTOD found inspiration in their frustration and bounced back with So Divided -- initially conceived as an EP, but gradually expanded into a full-length effort -- in late 2006. Their subsequent departure from Interscope Records convinced the musicians to launch their own label, Richter Scale Records, in partnership with the Texas-based Justice Records. Free of the constraints of conventional label deals, the band then brewed up a batch of contemporary prog anthems and released an EP, 2008's Festival Thyme, to ramp up support for a full-length album. The Century of Self followed in early 2009.

AYWKUBTTOD then scaled down their lineup, choosing to record their next album as a four-piece. The result, Tao of the Dead, also doubled as one of the most band's most conceptual works to date, with a 16-song set list divided into two lengthy tracks, each of which was performed in a specific musical key. After Keely's move to Cambodia's capitol city, Phnom Penh, he, Reece, and Tao of the Dead recruits Autry Fulbright and Jamie Miller headed to Hanover, Germany in the summer of 2012 to record Lost Songs. One of the band's most overtly political sets of songs, the album was released that October. The group returned to Texas' Hill Country to record 2014's IX, an introspective set named after the ninth planet in the solar system in the world of Frank Herbert's Dune.

After the 1994 split of Bloomington, Indiana's Antenna, former Blake Babies guitarist John Strohm formed Velo-Deluxe with Go Man Go bassist Kenny Childers and Marmalade drummer Mitch Harris, then only a 19-year-old freshman at Indiana University. Strohm already had an entire album's worth of songs ready, but wanted to work them into a full band setting. After months of practicing and recording a rough demo, the band entered Echo Park Studio in Bloomington in the late spring of 1994 to record Superelastic with producer/engineer Anjali Dutt (Swervedriver, Oasis, My Bloody Valentine).
The album was released on Mammoth Records in the fall of that year, and European tours with Dodgy, Drugstore, Del Amitri and Out Of My Hair followed. Two subsequent recording sessions failed to please executives at Mammoth, who declined to release another album. In the interim, Strohm and Harris joined El Nino's Glen Hicks, area pedal-steel player Dennis Scoville and guitarist Steve Woods to record Caledonia for Flat Earth Records, with the band billed as John P. Strohm and the Hello Strangers. With Childers already out of the band, Velo-Deluxe called it quits in the spring of 1996. Strohm then moved to Minneapolis, toured for over a year with the Lemonheads and eventually settled in Alabama, from where he continues to release his own solo material. Childers has since played in Bloomington bands Stranded At The Drive In and The Prom, while Harris moved to New York City to study film.
