One of Mick Collins' many post-Gories projects, the Dirtbombs initially seemed to exist more in concept than in reality. As if in reaction to the bass-less sound of the Gories, the Detroit-based band brought together two drummers, two bass players, and Collins on vocals and guitar. And other than consistently loud volumes and lots of noise, the Dirtbombs actually displayed a surprisingly diverse sound, composing across a broad spectrum of styles from garage rock, punk, and glam to classic soul and R&B. They began primarily as a 7" band, issuing five singles before Larry Hardy of In the Red convinced them to record a full-length, 1998's Horndog Fest. After issuing another handful of singles, the Dirtbombs released their sophomore album, Ultraglide in Black, in May 2001. An album devoted to vintage R&B covers, Ultraglide in Black won the band a growing following in Europe, aided by frequent overseas touring (including a jaunt with the White Stripes). Collins and company returned to a tougher, more rock-oriented sound for 2003's Dangerous Magical Noise, and came back in 2005 with Billiards at Nine Thirty, a split album with King Khan & the Shrines. That same May, In the Red released If You Don't Already Have a Look, a two-disc compilation that featured 52 tracks comprised of cover tunes, singles, and six new songs.

By this point, the Dirtbombs' revolving lineup had more or less solidified around Collins, drummers Ben Blackwell and Pat Pantano, and bassists Ko Shih and Troy Gregory. The quintet continued to tour, licensed their music for use in several commercials, and returned to the studio in fall 2006 to begin working on a new release. Although originally intended to be a four-song EP, the project soon turned into the band's fourth full-length effort. Entitled We Have You Surrounded, it was released in February 2008. Following this the band released singles for In the Red and Cass, Collins took time to play with a reunited Gories, and the bandmembers plotted their next move. When it came, it was a surprise to many. Released in 2011, Party Store reflected Collins' love of the electronic sounds of his hometown and featured the band tackling songs by the techno scene's founding fathers (Juan Atkins, Derrick May), innovators (Carl Craig), and hitmakers (Inner City) in their inimitable style.

James Burdyshaw (aka Brother James) was already a legend in the Seattle music scene by the time the Sinister Six got underway in 1992. He had been involved with the mid-'80s trio 64 Spiders, the late-'80s rock group Catbutt with members of the U-Men and Girl Trouble, as well as the short-lived, early-'90s garage outfit Yummy. Burdyshaw founded the Sinister Six with vocalist Doug White, bassist Mark Ferkingstad, and drummer Erik Hildahl. Together the new quartet found themselves under the influence of various garage band luminaries -- the most mentionable being the Sonics, who'd preceded the Sinister Six by three decades on the Northwest scene. Drawing their name from Spider-Man comics, the band's first release, the single Go Away/Keep My Cool, appeared in October of 1992 on friend Blake Wright's Empty Records label. The imprint was known for championing Northwest punk rock, and their roster included bands such as Dead Moon and Crackerbash. 1600 copies of the debut were printed up and showcased a hard garage rock style intertwined with a handful of blues elements. Burdyshaw had dealt with Wright on prior occasions when Catbutt and Yummy released 7"s on Empty. The Sinister Six followed the effort with another single, titled Pain in My Head/I Can Only Give You Everything, for the Get Hip label in 1993. The group also visited Seattle's Egg Studios, where they recorded their full-length debut album. Famed underground recording engineer Conrad Uno, known for his work with such acts as Mudhoney and the Posies, was involved with the record along with producer Tom Price, who was the veteran guitar player of the U-Men, Kings of Rock, and the Monkeywrench. The Sinister Six had a long-standing relationship with the two gentlemen, especially with Price, with whom Burdyshaw had worked in Catbutt. Empty released the album titled Outta Sight! on September 14, 1993. Independent label Bag of Hammers released a single from the full-length dubbed Out of My Way/Deloused. The following year, the Sinister Six produced their second full-length record for Empty. The album, titled Nobody Rides for Free, was released in May 1994. The recording -- which included material from the Puget Power IV compilation, as well as the track "Keep My Cool" from the Go Away single -- was pressed in the limited quantity of 500. Nobody Rides for Free was followed by a large-scale European tour that summer in order to promote the album. After a brief hiatus during the mid-'90s, the Sinister Six reconvened with a retuned lineup. White and Burdyshaw were still in the band, however Ferkingstad and Hildahl were not. With the help of new bassist Erick Stockinger and new drummer Erik Peterson, the group recorded their third full-length record. Sinisteria! hit stores in the summer of 1997 and remained true to the original intentions of the band's sound, although half of the group's founding members had departed. Champaign, IL, punk-pop group Sarge was formed in late 1995 by singer/guitarist Elizabeth Elmore and ex-Corndolly bassist Rachel Switzky. Recruiting drummer Russ Horvath, the group played their debut show in January 1996, quickly becoming a popular local attraction. Upon signing to the Mud label, Sarge debuted that March with the excellent single "Dear Josie, Love Robyn," resurfacing a few months later on a split single with Supporting Actress issued on Grand Theft Autumn. After recording their acclaimed 1996 debut Charcoal, Horvath quit the group and was replaced by drummer Chad Romanski, who signed on in time to cut the 1997 single "Stall." Sarge's breakthrough sophomore LP The Glass Intact appeared in 1998 and was recorded with second guitarist Pat Cramer, who quit the band a short time later. His replacement was Sue Roth; lineup changes continued to plague the group in the months which followed, however, and in late 1998 Switzky left Sarge as well, opening the door for ex-Castor bassist Derek Niedringhaus. The following year Elmore enrolled in Northwestern Law School, and in the wake of her semester finals opted to dissolve the band, playing the occasional performance as a solo act; Distant, a posthumous collection of Sarge demos and live tracks, followed in the spring of 2000.

Indie punk-popsters Bo Bud Greene were formed in Austin, Texas in 1992 as Paint; guitarist/vocalist Anderson Bracht and guitarist Sean Mullens met through a classified ad, and quickly added drummer Tim Dittmar. The group self-released a number of cassettes with several different bassists before legal action forced their name change in 1993. Marcara Fort became the full-time bassist shortly thereafter, and Bo Bud Greene began recording singles and compilation tracks to supplement their cassette-only work. After two singles on the Last Beat label, the group recorded its debut album, Whatever, in 1995 for Backyard Records. Several more compilation appearances preceded the band's full-length follow-up, The Same But Different, which appeared on Super Cottonmouth in 1997.
