PUZZLE PUNKS Budub 1996

Discogs

Puzzle Punks is a conceptual noise-punk/experimental duo formed by Japanese artists Shinro Ohtake and Yamantaka Eye (a founding member of legendary groups Hanatarash and Boredoms). All music by Puzzle Punks is made exclusively with children toys.

In the Ohtake's studio at Uwajima artists set up a workshop full of toy instruments and objects to perform and record Puzzle Punks material. In spring and early summer of 1995, the duo recorded material for a Pipeline: 24 Smash Hits By 24 Puzzle Punk Bands "compilation", where they presented each track under a different moniker. The CD album was accompanied by the Ohtake's Yamantaka Diary book.

Their second album Budub was released in the autumn of 1996 by Time Bomb Records on CD and picture disc LP. Soon after the same year, Puzzle Punks recorded more material at Osaka, with Yojiro Tatekawa on drums. It was released as Puzzoo album over a decade after in 2006 by Time Bomb.

THE PEARLFISHERS Za Zsa's Garden 1993

Discogs

Pearlfishers Biography by Stewart Mason

An ever-shifting Scottish group led by singer/songwriter David Scott, the only constant member, the Pearlfishers are a glorious soft pop band mixing acoustic-based music with subtle orchestral flourishes, rather like a Glasgow-based Prefab Sprout with a major Brian Wilson fixation. Since forming in 1989 the Pearlfishers have refined and broadened their sound while maintaining a steadily growing cult following.

Scott began writing songs while a teenager in Glasgow in the early '80s. In the summer of 1984, Scott played his earliest bedroom efforts to local musician Bobby Henry, who offered to put a pair of them on The Shift Compilation, an anthology of Glasgow bands released on Henry's own Shift Records. Released under the band name Chewy Raccoon, a joke name that stuck, the songs attracted enough attention that Scott and the band were signed to Shift's distributor, Phonogram, which released the group's sole single, "Don't Touch Me," in August 1985. The single flopped, Scott was dropped by Phonogram, and the Chewy Raccoon name was, thankfully, retired.

RITUAL DEVICE Henge 1993

Discogs

Ritual Device Biography by Mike DaRonco

Ritual Device imported the Chicago sound of Big Black, the Effigies, and the Jesus Lizard inspired punk to their hometown of Omaha, NE. With their own ire of complex guitars and screamy vocals, Man's Ruin Records debuted the quartet's hallmark noise on a 1994 split 10" with Killdozer. Continuing with the -ismist Records 7" of Rabe, the lineup of Randy Cotton (bass), Eric Ebers (drums), Mike Saklar (guitar), and Timothy Moss (vocals) settled in 1995 as they toured the East Coast. But by the time their live album Trademark of Quality Years came out by the end of that year, Ritual Device called it a day with Tommy Moss moving on to Men of Porn while Cotton and Saklar continued with Ravine.

Recorded by David Wm Sims of The Jesus Lizard, Pigface, Scratch Acid and Rapeman
