HARRIET THE SPY Unfuckwithable 1997

Thanks to Jim

AllMusic Review by

Unfuckwithable is nihilistic punk rock at its finest. Here, the guitars squall all over the place, the bass is extremely loud, and the vocals are buried; this appealingly lo-fi sound gives their music a who-cares abandon that's reinforced by the nihilistic lyrics. There aren't any answers, just bad attitudes, as the group spits profanity-fueled rants about death, the internet, and "the reverse psychology of picking up chicks in the hardcore emo scene." Harriet the Spy probably knows a thing or two about the "hardcore emo scene," too, because its music, guided by meaty barre chords, minor-key melodic basslines, and, occasionally, by Ian McKay-like barks, is thoroughly post-hardcore. They're also influenced by emo, but not by the teen-poetry poppy emo popularized by the Get Up Kids and the Promise Ring. Rather, their sound is partially derived from the more taut, dissonant, early emo of bands like Rites of Spring and Honor Role. Fans of those groups will appreciate Unfuckwithable's angularity and relentless drive.

THE HIGH FIVES And A Whole Lotta You! 1997

Thanks to Jim

AllMusic Review by

The Hi-Fives describe themselves as "beat-punk," which is a fairly accurate description; they've basically updated the garagey side of 1960s British beat music by channeling it through modern pop and punk. It's a sound that's interesting at first -- a lot like the frantic energy of rockabilly -- but beyond that, there's not much in the Hi-Fives' songs to make the album interesting. And a Whole Lotta You blasts through 16 songs (14 of them under two minutes), including a cover of Gloria Jones's "Tainted Love" -- and in the end, nothing really sticks out aside from their ability to bash furiously through a song before you've even noticed its melody. For those fascinated with garage, beat, and rockabilly, it's certainly a worthwhile album, but for anyone else, the Hi-Fives are the sort of band that's best heard at a cheap live show.

HERE Brooklyn Bank 1998

Thanks to Luis

 Trip hop from Italy

Meathead is probably one of the worst crossover groups I have ever heard. That is why it comes as a big surprise that Italian Meathead member M. Teho Teardo has teamed up with ex Cop Shoot Cop member J F Coleman and recorded "Brooklyn Bank", an album that, at times, is truly great.
The two call themselves Here, and combine sampled sounds with live instruments. Far from a new idea, but Here manage to give the material an unusually organic feel, perhaps due to the contributions from among others David Ouimet (who has played with Motherhead Bug and in the Foetus live band) and Bill Bronson of Swans. The music incorporates genres like drum'n'bass, electronica, rock, and pop, but what really makes Here stand out is that they insist on sticking to song structures. The whole album has a very melancholic atmosphere, which is further accentuated by mellow strings.
Three tracks are guested by Lydia Lunch, and she adds a desperate, sexually charged atmosphere. Three other songs feature singer Carolyn Coleman, and in particular the album ending "Pain", which revolves around her vocals, bears a sad, emotional strength. Unfortunately, neither of the two main Here men are very good singers, so the tracks where they are left on their own feel like they lack something.

Their full-length debut, Satellites Beaming Back at You, was issued in 1996.
