HARRIET THE SPY Unfuckwithable 1997

AllMusic Review by

Unfuckwithable is nihilistic punk rock at its finest. Here, the guitars squall all over the place, the bass is extremely loud, and the vocals are buried; this appealingly lo-fi sound gives their music a who-cares abandon that's reinforced by the nihilistic lyrics. There aren't any answers, just bad attitudes, as the group spits profanity-fueled rants about death, the internet, and "the reverse psychology of picking up chicks in the hardcore emo scene." Harriet the Spy probably knows a thing or two about the "hardcore emo scene," too, because its music, guided by meaty barre chords, minor-key melodic basslines, and, occasionally, by Ian McKay-like barks, is thoroughly post-hardcore. They're also influenced by emo, but not by the teen-poetry poppy emo popularized by the Get Up Kids and the Promise Ring. Rather, their sound is partially derived from the more taut, dissonant, early emo of bands like Rites of Spring and Honor Role. Fans of those groups will appreciate Unfuckwithable's angularity and relentless drive.
