(YOUNG) PIONEERS Free The (Young) Pioneers Now! 1998

AllMusic Review by

The (Young) Pioneers from Richmond, VA, fire up ragged blasts of blues-infused punk rock on their heroic-sounding record Free the (Young) Pioneers Now!, which combines Civil War imagery and Southern politics with raging punk numbers equipped with handclaps, a harmonica, sax, and organ. Some of the lyrics are provocative, such as "We're all jumping and shouting and full of sin/And we dream (of an albatross)/All the little babies born to young lovers/Die at the hands of bad jobs" from "Drown in the James," and there are two great covers, the Impression's "Meeting Over Yonder" and Impatient Youth's "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition." More artful than singer/guitarist Adam Payson's last band, the straight-up hardcore Born Against, the (Young) Pioneers stand out from their punk rock brethren by adding some genuine boogie and soul to their unruly, radical sound. And Free the (Young) Pioneers Now! is by far their best record.
