Kinda Superchunkish.

Jessica Six Biography

by Mike DaRonco

The Houston-based pop-punk quartet of Jessica Six began in 1994 with an accompanied maturity of indie undertones and personal lyrics. After releasing two compilation tracks, Act Your Age Records put out their debut EP as a split with fellow Texans Schrasj in 1998 before quickly breaking up that same year. With members eventually moving onto Schrasj, the Cinders, and Port Vale, Act Your Age and Highwaterwater Records compiled everything that Jessica Six recorded on the 1999 album All Good Things.

Tenderloin Biography

by Chris Parker

A hearty slab of Middle American boogie-down blues, Tenderloin featured steer-sized lead singer/harmonica player Ernie Locke, fresh from time in another Lawrence, KA, institution, the Sin City Disciples. In 1993, Locke hooked up with brothers Gray and Brock Ginther (on guitar and bass, respectively) and drummer Guy Stephens to record the band's debut, Let It Leak, which was picked up by Warner Bros. But the band splintered and Locke recruited three new members for their Warner follow-up, including Reverend Horton Heat drummer Patrick "Taz" Bentley; the Rev's guitar tech, Kirk St. James on guitar; and bassist John Cutler. With Locke's butt-crack and Buddha-belly baring stage show leading a furious roadhouse rock attack, the band supported their 1995 second album, Bullseye, touring with kindred spirits the Supersuckers. However, Warner dropped them the next year. They hooked up with indie Time Bomb for their self-titled swan song in 1997, officially breaking up the following year. Locke and Cutler went on to form a new Lawrence-area band, Parlay.

Stanford Prison Experiment Biography

by AllMusic

Formed in Los Angeles, California, USA, in the early 90s, Stanford Prison Experiment comprise Mike Starkey (guitar, vocals), Mario Jiminez (vocals), Mark Fraser (bass) and Davey Latter (drums). Matching the energy of punk with rock riffs and construction, the band’s quick rise followed the release of a strong debut album. Its follow-up, The Gato Hunch, produced by Ted Nicely (Girls Against Boys, Fugazi), followed six weeks of touring alongside close friends Quicksand, with whom they also released a joint single in 1995. They moved to Island Records in 1997 and released their debut for the label in 1998.

Banana Erectors Biography

by Mike DaRonco

Under the spell of the Ramones, early 60's female pop-singers and '77 punk resulted in Japan's Banana Erectors. With the combination of May's high pitched voice leading on snotty, three-chord pop-punk resulted in a lot of attention on both sides of the Pacific and a deal with Sympathy for The Record Industry. 1998 saw their debut single not too long after, followed by their self-titled full-length the next year.

NERDY GIRL Twist Her 1996

Discogs

Nerdy Girl Biography

by Stewart Mason

Throughout several lineup changes, the one constant of Montreal (and later, Los Angeles)-based indie poppers Nerdy Girl was singer/songwriter Cecil Seaskull. Seaskull's high, wobbly pitched but unmistakably affecting voice, matched with lyrics that sound like pages from a smart but rueful single woman's diary, were Nerdy Girl's trademarks, and while the group never gained more than a small audience of twee pop hipsters, their records have a literate intelligence that makes them considerably more interesting than most of the artless lo-fi caterwauling of their era.

Half Italian-American and half French-Canadian, Seaskull (born Cecil Castellucci) was raised in Montreal before moving to her father's hometown of New York City to attend the New York High School of the Performing Arts (yes, the Fame school). Upon graduation, Seaskull attended the film school at New York University before returning to Montreal and joining the all-female punk trio Bite. When that group dissolved, Seaskull formed Nerdy Girl as a duo with guitarist Gordon Hashimoto on Valentine's Day, 1994. Taking their name from an early Seaskull song about her lifelong obsession with Star Wars -- Seaskull admits to sleeping on Luke Skywalker sheets well into her late twenties -- the duo released a self-titled 1994 EP that was appropriately enough divided into sides marked "Luke" and "Leia." Hashimoto left after a follow-up single was recorded and Seaskull replaced him with a full band including guitarist Gabriel Levine, bassist Ron Woo and drummer Kim Temple. That lineup recorded both the 1995 EP Dime Store Hussy and Nerdy Girl's first and only full-length release, 1996's masterful Twist Her, a mature, reflective album with echoes of both Joni Mitchell's Blue and Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville in Seaskull's hauntingly personal but never exhibitionistic lyrics and the simple but graceful indie pop arrangements.

The usual hassles of keeping a stable band lineup intervened shortly after the recording sessions for Twist Her and both Levine and Temple left the group. Seaskull recruited guitarist/violinist Jessica Moss and drummer Eric Craven, but while this version of Nerdy Girl did tour extensively and also recorded a handful of tracks for compilation albums, Seaskull unceremoniously retired the band name in early 1998. Cecil Seaskull's first solo album, Whatever, featuring a guest performance by fellow Montreal-native Rufus Wainwright, was released in 1998 by the Toronto-based indie Teenage USA.

Sinners Biography

by AllMusic

Comprising Sven Köhler (vocals), Michael Sellers (guitar), Henki Van Den Born (guitar), David Sellers (bass) and Kiddie Manzin (drums), Sweden’s Sinners are that country’s closest approximation of the tight, muscular R&B sound of the UK’s Godfathers. As well as the obvious musical similarities, the Sinners’ wardrobe also encompasses the same style of ‘sharp suits’ while their live appearances document a commitment to hard work in addition to technical ability. They were originally conceived of in 1983 when the various members were active on Sweden’s nascent garage rock scene. They have recorded widely since, though they remain primarily a live attraction - very much like the aforementioned Godfathers, they have never truly managed to convert their aplomb as performers into a similarly compulsive studio album. However, 1993’s Fly With Us was comfortably their best effort to date, including at least three excellent songs in ‘Undressed To Kill’, ‘Love Don’t Pay My Bills’ and ‘Heading South’.

Presents Review

by Nitsuh Abebe

No matter how spacey or odd Sardina's presentation gets, they're all about conventional, strummy pop music (as evidenced by Presents' occasionally cheesy radio-pop choruses.) For an album on the pop end of "alternative," however, this sometimes works well -- some of the band's more interesting elements add a bit of an edge to an otherwise very mainstream sound.

THE SF SEALS Nowherica B/W Being Cheated 7 inch 1993

Discogs

In the early nineties, World Of Pooh members Barbara Manning, Melanie Clarin, and Kim Osterwald transformed into the San Francisco Seals. Lead vocalist Manning wrote the band's original songs; Clarin handled the drumming duties and also sang and played accordion, as well as other instruments, while Osterwald played cello. The music of SF Seals was largely pop-oriented, drawing inspiration from the '60s Bay Area scene and often spiced with samples and strange noises -- although as the band grew instrumentally, those aspects became less prominent in their live work. Manning was particularly fond of covering other artists -- often obscure tunes -- both on record and in the Seals' live shows.

Crumb Biography

by Jason Ankeny

The San Francisco alternative rock band Crumb was formed in 1993 by vocalist Robby Cronholm and guitarist Mark Weinberg, longtime friends who first began writing and performing together while still in high school. After playing their earliest shows as an acoustic duo, Crumb soon swelled to a quartet, with any number of bassists and drummers passing through their ranks; in 1994, after self-releasing the LP Happy Blah, the group welcomed bassist Matt Powell before signing to Qwest Records to cut their 1996 major label debut Romance Is a Slowdance. With new bassist Jim Bowser and drummer Mike Dugan, Crumb resurfaced in 1998 with ...seconds, minutes, hours..., their first record for the Red Ant label.

Monster Voodoo Machine Biography

by Jason Anderson

Formed in Canada in 1991, Monster Voodoo Machine was the modern metal brainchild of Toronto musician/vocalist Adam Sewell. The singer culled the ranks of bands such as Tatentanz and Backlash to create the first band lineup consisting of Mark Gibson on guitar, Drew Gauley on drums, and bassist Terry Landry. This particular set of musicians released the group's first recording, Burn in November of 1991 on the local independent label Epidemic Records. This debut EP made plenty of waves around the band's hometown and throughout Canada, yet Monster Voodoo Machine would endure several tours and lineup changes before a second release could be made a reality. As the group's touring became more successful, the outfit grew figuratively and literally as second guitarist Dave Rose and keyboardist Stacey Hoskins were added to the lineup -- no doubt to thicken the group's already dense industrial metal sound. As the band prepared for their first major-label release, several more lineup changes slowed down their performing and songwriting progress. Both guitarists Gibson and Rose were replaced by Jason Cuddy (previously of Mundane) and Darren Quinn. Gauley also left after many tours in support of Burn. The drummer was replaced briefly by Dylan Huziak and then Dean Bentley came on solidifying the band's most successful lineup. This group then released the their second EP and major-label debut State Voodoo/State Control in 1994 for RCA Records, and later that year the first full-length disc Suffersystem. Both releases offered an updated, mechanized sound comparable to, but much heavier than more successful industrial metal artists of the era, like White Zombie and Ministry. Tours with Life of Agony and Marilyn Manson followed as Monster Voodoo Machine truly began to build national momentum, and in 1995 Suffersystem won a prestigious Juno Award for best hard rock album. Just when things seemed to be going along nicely for the band, Landry and Hoskins parted with Sewell and company. The two were replaced by Soulstorm members Nick Sagias (keyboards) and bassist Chris Harris. In 1996, after releasing 2000 numbered copies of Pirate Satellite, an "officially leaked demo," Monster Voodoo Machine announced that they were breaking up. Perhaps not so surprisingly, the group reformed in 1997 without keyboardist Sagias who went on to reform Soulstorm. The group began touring again and in 1998 released Direct Reaction Now for Doctor Dream Records. Practically void of the industrial stylings that had greatly contributed to the band's mid-'90s sound and success, Direct Reaction Now failed to re-ignite Monster Voodoo Machine's fan base and in 1999 the band called it quits for good.
