FALLING SICKNESS Right On Time 1996

Discogs

Falling Sickness Biography by Mike DaRonco

Formed on Christmas Day in 1989, before any of the members hit the age of 20,Falling Sickness played their brand of hyperactive ska-punk throughout the California coast. Six years later, after playing gigs with the Voodoo Glow Skulls, Rancid, and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, all they really had to show were numerous demos, two car accidents, and constant comparisons to Operation Ivy -- until they got hooked up with Hopeless Records in 1995, that is. After a split single with the Nobodys the following year, their first full-length, Right on Time, came out, an album that documented their material from the last six years, the only difference being that it was actually recorded in a real live studio rather than someone's bedroom. Because the World Has Failed on Us Both was their 1998 follow-up and showed more of a grown-up, mature side rather than songs about drinking and destroying property. A split 10" with Dysentery followed through Hopeless' sister label, Sub City, in 1999, the same year the guys also took part in the Take Action Tour (alongside Fifteen, Against All Authority, Dillinger Four, and more).

Satelliters Biography by Mike DaRonco

Inspired by their love for 50's B-movies, The Satelliters started in 1993 with a nasty romp of drunken, three-chord garage punk for the intentions of "freaking people out." Accompanied by their masked stage presence and the garb of aging hipsters, the band's debut full-length Hi Karate was released in 1996 with the financial assistance of Dionysus Records. Dipping into their huge discography (which includes a number of singles and EPs on Demolition Derby, Pin-up and Screaming Apple Records) Dionysus released four more CDs in the States over the next eight years, including Wylde Knights of Action in 1997, Shake, Shake, Shake in 1998, Sexplosive in 2001, and Hashish in 2005. Continuing to add to their overflowing catalog of psychedelic 60's garage rock, the label put out The Satelliter's self-titled EP in 2006, which would be followed with Where Do We Go? in 2007.

M.I.J. Bloo EP 1998

Discogs

M.I.J. take the time-honored route of honing their skills before unleashing their sound on the world. Forming in 1994, instead of getting together for a few shows and practices and rushing out their demo or, even worse, full-length, the band spent time working out their material before it felt right. And, on their debut full-length ("The Radio Goodnight") it feels right as the band jumps around from full-on rock attacks to methodical pools of emotions.
With a gentle warmth like spring rain, m.i.j. cranks out a sound mixing the more ethereal melodies of indie pop with emo's tendency for driving arrangements, resulting in a sound straddling the fence between the two genres. Not as contemplative nor personal as typical Midwestern emo, though featuring more texture than the oft-fuzzy melodies of pop, their albums find a balance between soft-focus melodies and punk-descended rhythms. - last.fm

Indie rock band from Malvern, United Kingdom, formed in the early 1990s.

Welcome to the Rodeo Review by Steven McDonald

You may be happy to know that the spirit (and sound) of early Blondie has not been lost to the world -- it's alive and well and powerpopping along in the form of Blessed Ethel, a Britpop bunch who can probably lay claim to the Rezillos as another spiritual ancestor (though there's a lot less shrieking going on here.) What we have are buzzsaw guitars, snapping drums, sprightly rhythms, and Sara Doran's voice cutting through the mix like a searchlight -- no claim to range, but she uses what she has in the best way possible.

EVEN Come Again 1998

Discogs

Even Biography by Ed Nimmervoll

More so than You Am I, Australia's Even is a band unashamedly influenced and emulating the classic pop/rock of the '60s and '70s. Even's leader, singer and guitarist Ashley Naylor lives for playing and creating music and most of the time will be found playing with more than one act at a time, leading his own group and playing sideman for others.

At 17, Naylor fronted the Swarm but soon gave up that group's indie leanings (R.E.M., Smiths) for the classic pop that inspires him. Even was formed in March 1994 with fellow ex-Swarm Matthew Cotter, and it was completed by bass player Wally Kempton, moonlighting from his duties with Melbourne-based power pop exponents the Meanies. A year later, Naylor was also balancing his duties between two bands, leading Even and playing guitar in Fragment, a group fronted by Naylor's songwriting friend Danny Vertessy. Fragment recorded two albums as Rail, in the Teenage Fanclub mould.

In the meantime, Even had gained a record contract of its own, starting in May 1995 with the CD EP, In Stereo, followed by the Ten to Forty-Six EP and the debut album Less Is More. By 1998 both Ashley Naylor and Wally Kempton had made Even their main focus for the recording of the second album, Come Again. In 1999 Naylor created another sideline called the Grapes, co-starring female singer Sherry Rich, casting its musical net in the Gram Parsons/Emmylou Harris country direction without losing sight of the pop that is the hallmark of Ashley Naylor's work.
