San Diego's Fluf play good-hearted punk-pop in the vein of Sugar and Dinosaur Jr. Guitarist/vocalist O. and bassist Josh Higgins had played in Olivelawn, but formed fluf in 1992 with a new drummer, Miles Gillett. The trio recorded a slew of seven-inch singles (collected on 1995's The Classic Years), but finally released a debut album on Headhunter/Cargo in mid-1993. The album confusingly had separate titles for each format (CD, cassette and vinyl), but is popularly known as Mangravy. Second album Home Improvements appeared early the following year, as did Compact Disc Is Weak. Waikiki followed in 1997, and a year later the group returned with Road Rage. I Know I'm Somebody followed in fall 2000.

Flop formed in 1989 when vocalist and guitarist Rusty Willoughby and drummer Nate Johnson left the group Pure Joy and joined up with guitarist Bill Campbell from Chemistry Set and bassist Paul Schurr from the Seers of Bavaria. After releasing a terrifically melodic, driving punk-pop album, Flop and the Revenge of the Mopsqueezer, on Frontier Records, the group was signed to Epic Records and produced an equally catchy major label debut in Whenever You're Ready. Apparently, Epic was not ready for Flop, and dropped the band shortly after their tour supporting the record. Now back with Frontier, Flop's sound has an extra edge to it, making the band's brand of dry-witted, intelligent pop that much more intruiging.

Biography

Drain was the ambient techno alias of King Coffey, better known as the drummer of the Butthole Surfers. Born in 1964, Coffey joined the Butthole Surfers in 1983, and began Drain in 1992 with the LP Pick Up Heaven, which -- despite the presence of samples and drum machines -- explored more traditional guitar-rock ground. However, with the project's second effort, 1996's Offspeed and In There (released on the indie label Trance Syndicate, a company owned and operated by Coffey in his native Austin, Texas), Drain took the plunge into experimental dance music, fusing hip-hop and trance beats with an eclectic collage of samples and influences.

Led by frontwoman Sarah McLeod, the Australian alternative rock band the Superjesus was formed in Adelaide in late 1994. The group's debut, an EP titled Eight Step Rail, spent over a month at the top of the Aussie independent charts, later garnering a pair of ARIA awards (the down under equivalent of the Grammys). In 1998, the Superjesus returned with their full-length major-label debut, Sumo.

Hailing out of the rainy days of London, England, Elevate bring out the grimmer aspects of indie-noise in comparison to the likes of early Sonic Youth and Girls Against Boys. Formed in 1993, an immediate signing to local label Flowershop soon followed with the release of their debut full-length "Bronzee" in 1994 and 1996's "The Architect." A US distribution deal soon came thanks to Mammoth Records, who released 1997's "Interior" EP. The next year saw the release of "All I Need (Is Love) and "Next Life Platoon."

L.A.'s astroPuppees began as the basement project of singer/songwriter/guitarist Kelley Ryan. Playing the songs she wrote and recorded downstairs led to collaborations with her friends, including songwriter Steve Toland. The duo wrote "It's Not Christmas," which they sent to the Shoes; the song ended up on a Christmas compilation from Black Vinyl Records, the group's label. Ryan went back to the basement and recorded some more songs with her friends, including bassist/vocalist Maureen Serrao and drummer Dan McCarroll.

After Serrao went to culinary school and McCarroll went on tour with a band, the astroPuppees were put on hold for a time. Ryan went to Ireland and also studied cooking, while still writing songs and playing guitar in Irish pubs. On her return, Ryan met with another of her friends, singer/songwriter/producer Don Dixon; he mixed some of her new songs. Serrao rejoined the band and Ryan sent tapes of the mixes off to some of her friends; a copy of the tape made its way to Hightone Records, who offered the astroPuppees a deal. In 1996, they released the group's debut album, You Win the Bride, while 1999 saw the release of Pet, which featured guest performances by Marshall Crenshaw and Don Dixon. Released in 2002, Little Chick Tsunami marked the band's first album for Manatee, Kelley Ryan's own imprint. Sugar Beat found a more mature, streamlined set of songs from astroPuppees upon its 2005 release date.

The Irish guitar pop ironists A House formed in Dublin in 1985 from the remnants of the group Last Chance. Comprised of the core trio of vocalist Dave Couse, guitarist Fergal Bunbury and bassist Martin Healy and regularly aided by satellite members Dave Dawson (drums), David Morrissey (keyboards) and Susan Kavanagh (backing vocals), the group debuted in 1987 with the single "Kick Me Again, Jesus," issued on their own Hip label. The record won considerable press coverage and resulted in a contract with Blanco y Negro, which issued A House's debut LP On Our Big Fat Merry-Go-Round in 1988.

When the album and its 1990 follow-up I Want Too Much both performed poorly, A House was dropped from their label; while rumors of the band's demise circulated, they instead signed to Setanta and resurfaced with the EPs "Doodle" and "Bingo." "Endless Art," a single from the latter release produced by Edwyn Collins, engendered considerable controversy over its subject matter, a list of long-dead writers, musicians and painters whose work still endured in the modern era; because the run-down included only male artists, feminists were outraged, and A House ultimately cut a new, distaff version of the track for their 1991 LP I Am the Greatest.

Although the album initially appeared resigned to the same commercial fate as its predecessors, the single "Take It Easy on Me" became a hit in 1992; I Am the Greatest was subsequently reissued, and soon A House had its first major success. With Collins again in the producer's seat, the group resurfaced in 1994 with Wide Eyed & Ignorant, which met with little commercial interest; undeterred, A House returned to the studio, recording No More Apologies in 1996.
