Pittsburgh math rockers Don Caballero were one of the first bands to expand on the work of genre innovators like Bastro, Bitch Magnet, and (especially) Slint. Their music was entirely instrumental, and while their guitar interplay was as complex and dissonant as any of their peers, the real driving force behind their precisely calibrated attack was virtuosic drummer Damon Che. In essence, it was Che's manic explosions and stop-on-a-dime shifts in time signature that mapped out the trail his bandmates followed. His whirlwind of percussion helped pace the crashing din of the rest of the quartet, yet they also had a firm grasp of dynamics and often slowed things down into a heavy dirge. And despite the influence of jazz, there was no improvisation -- all the group's compositions were carefully structured, no matter how chaotic they seemed. Don Caballero recorded several albums for Touch & Go over the '90s to generally positive critical response, before going their separate ways in 2001.

The sadly obscure band Maximillian Colby was on the forefront of post punk music descended from East Coast hardcore. Like Jawbox, the band managed to match an aggressive clamor with somber melodies and became legendary to a small group of devoted fans.
Maximillian Colby began on the campus of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia in the early 90s with Dave Nesmith and Drew Ringo on guitar and vocals, Bob Baynor on bass and vocals and Tom Richards on drums. Their first 7" on Washington D.C.'s Nervous Wreck Kids established the characteristics of their sound - intricate compositions and no boundaries. The band had two songs on Whirled Records compilations and then released their little-known classic split 12" with the Canadian band Shotmaker.
In 1995, Maximillian Colby was unfortunately cut short due to the sudden death of Bob Baynor. Following this tragedy, Nesmith and Ringo went on to form Sleepytime Trio with Ben Davis and Jonathan Fuller.

The Mr. T Experience came out of the same Berkeley/East Bay Gilman Street punk rock scene that eventually spawned Green Day, but they are often left out of the history of this scene, or at least they rarely fit prominently into the punk rock genealogy. The Mr. T Experience (or MTX for short) played the same Ramones/Buzzcocks/Descendents-inspired punk-pop for years without gaining any of the commercial success of Gilman Street peers Green Day and Rancid. Perhaps this is a result of the perception that MTX is a generic purveyor of a style that has been played multiple times by multiple bands that preceded them, but this is an unfair judgment. MTX breathe fresh life into punk-pop with their goofy pop culture references and catchy melodies. Sure, they're not that original, but some of the best bands in the world have been totally derivative.

Singer/songwriter/guitarist Dr. Frank (aka Frank Portman) is the only original member of the group, formed in the mid-'80s, leading him to jokingly refer to his group as MTX "Starship." After releasing two albums on obscure labels, MTX signed to Lookout! (the original home of Green Day), where they remained for years. After recording 1992's Milk Milk Lemonade, the group broke up, only to regroup the following year to record the Gun Crazy EP and Our Bodies Our Selves LP. After this brief period of activity, they broke up again and then re-formed as a trio, recording the ...And the Women Who Love Them EP and two excellent bubblegum-punk albums, Love Is Dead and Revenge Is Sweet, and So Are You. Alcatraz followed in 1999 and the Miracle of Shame EP was issued a year later. Early 2004 then brought the release of Yesterday Rules. Outside of MTX, Dr. Frank issued a solo album in 1999 through Lookout! entitled Show Business Is My Life and also published his first novel, King Dork, in spring 2006 to rave reviews.

Surf music revivalists the Phantom Surfers formed in early 1988 around the lineup of guitarists Johnny Bartlett and Mel Bergman, bassist Mike Lucas, and drummer Danny Seelig. Originally founded at the 11th hour to fill a cancelled gig at the University of California Santa Cruz, the group quickly emerged as an underground favorite, famed for their mystery-kitsch image (Lone Ranger masks were de rigeur) and carefully choreographed stage act; the debut Phantom Surfers LP 18 Deadly Ones followed on Norton Records in 1991 amidst a flurry of 7"s, and in the years to follow, the band remained frighteningly prolific, issuing albums and singles on over a dozen different labels (including discs with guitar legends Dick Dale and Davie Allan). In time, Seelig left the group to join the Hi-Fives and was replaced by drummer Russell Quan; in the wake of The Great Surf Crash of '97, Bartlett also handed in his resignation, with Maz Kattuah assuming his guitar duties. 2000's XXX Party featured contributions from comedy legends Rudy Ray "Dolomite" Moore and Clarence "Blowfly" Reid.

Artist Biography by Jason Ankeny

Inspired by the emergence of the riot-grrrl movement spearheaded by bands like Bikini Kill, Bratmobile and Heavens to Betsy, singers/guitarists Carrie Brownstein and Becca Albee teamed with drummer CJ Phillips to form the Olympia, WA-based Excuse 17 in 1993. A series of compilation appearances preceded the trio's 1995 Kill Rock Stars debut Such Friends Are Dangerous; a self-titled effort for Chainsaw followed later that year, but in the wake of a split single with Lync, Excuse 17 disbanded. Albee later resurfaced in Motel No-Tell, while Brownstein rose to even greater heights as a member of Sleater-Kinney.
