Martin Luther Lennon Biography

Martin Luther Lennon (MLL) is the stage name of Los Angeles-based power pop singer/songwriter Tony Perkins. (He obviously couldn't use his real name without getting confused with the guy who played Norman Bates, so he took his stage handle from an interview with Paul McCartney where the ex-Beatle decried John Lennon's near-canonization after his murder; neither McCartney nor Perkins mean for the name to be insulting.) Born in the San Fernando Valley, Perkins adopted the moniker in the late '80s, also using it as an umbrella name for whatever band he was playing with, like in the early days of Alice Cooper.

The first MLL sessions were recorded between 1988 and 1990, but Perkins was diagnosed with Epstein-Barr Syndrome in the early '90s, which led to an enforced hiatus from performing. These five songs weren't released until 1995, when one appeared on the third Yellow Pills compilation and the other four showed up as part of Not Lame Records' first release, Sympophony #1. Not Lame signed Perkins later that year, and, in 1996, the first proper Martin Luther Lennon album was released. Music for a World Without Limitations featured Perkins on bass, backed by Steve Refling and Robbie Rist on guitar and drums, with occasional guitar and vocals from Cockeyed Ghost leader Adam Marsland. The same lineup featured on 1999's Escape to Paradox Island.

Perkins also developed and ran the Poptopia series of yearly Los Angeles power pop festivals and was an executive producer of the three-volume Poptopia! history of power pop released by Rhino Records in 1997.

Ribbon Fix played their debut show on August 10th, 1996 at the Epicenter Zone record store in San Francisco, opening for Full Boney and Uranium 9-Volt with its original four piece line-up consisting of Andi Camp (former Stella and Underside) on vocals/bass, Mark Rodgers (former Driftwood, Shroomunion and Perilisium Cantos) on vocals/guitar, Brian Gathy (former Savalas, Junkdrawer and Amber Inn) on guitar/bass and Mike Roberts (former Pawn) on drums. At the time, and with three contributing songwriters, the band didn't have too much material to draw from, but, following its first show, Ribbon Fix started writing at a seemingly furious rate. Before long, the band was lashing out regionally, up and down the West Coast, sharing bills with Cult of Eugene, the Icarus Line, Still Life and Jimmy Eat World.

The Morning Shakes Biography

The lineup of Jose Cuervo (guitar), Chris Tremens (bass), Scott Dents (drums), and Ravin' Shakes (vocals) are otherwise known as Morning Shakes. With their output of trashy rock & roll and carefree attitude of drinking and never thinking to their native of New York City, the band would release a number of 7"s on various labels before signing with Cacophone Records. Resulting in their debut full-length Lotta Trash! Lotta Action! In 1996, their El Camino EP soon followed before Morning Shakes' second album, Switchblades & Sideburns, was released in 1998.

Milky Wimpshake Biography

Milky Wimpshake are a lo-fi indie punk threesome from Newcastle originally consisting of Ms. Joey Ramone (drums), Christine (bass/vox), and frontman Pete Dale, whose scene credits include running the Slampt label; FAST Connection fanzine, and the bands Avocado Baby, Pussycat Trash, and Red Monkey. An early cassette-only release called Songs of Zoom and Buzz introduced the band's playful post-Television Personalities interpretations of modern life and included perhaps their most earnest recorded effort, a cover of Daniel Johnston's "True Love Will Find You in the End." A variety of sought-after 7"s followed, including Slampt's The Deviation Amplification Spiral and Seven Unlucky Sevens. Like their folk counterparts Belle & Sebastian, the band is charmingly literate with a due amount of self-deprecation to keep the kids from getting jealous of their cleverness.

In 1997, the band put out its first true album, Bus Route to Your Heart, which included such postmodern punk song titles as "Noam Chomsky vs. the Ramones" and "I Wanna Be Seen in Public with You." By this time, Ms. Ramone was replaced on the drums by Grant. In 2002, Lovers, Not Fighters appeared on Troubleman Unlimited in the States, continuing the band's brand of jangle pop guitar and bouncy bass, while lyrics name-checked Kierkegaard and Max Weber and ruminated about a crush based on a Scrabble triple-word score. The band's next record, 2005's Popshaped, was its first for new label Fortuna Pop, and was followed in 2008 by the One Good Use for My Heart EP. During this time Pete Dale also had a folk project called Pete Dale & the Beta Males and a noise rock group, Chronicity. In 2010 Milky Wimpshake released their fourth studio album, My Funny Social Crime, which was followed up five years later with the excited, spring-like tones of fifth full-length Encore, un Effort! The album featured the debut of new vocalist Sophie Evans, dueting with Dale on more than half of the album. Significantly younger than her newfound bandmates, Evans hadn't even been born by the time Milky Wimpshake had started playing out in the early '90s.

Calling all XTC fans! Is two LPs a decade too little? Here's a humble protégé snack to wile away those in between-meals. This New Jersey band is actually one Howard Herrick, whose sunny-pop confections, and especially the baroque hiccup of his straining high voice, are replicas of Andy Partridge's work in the early-to-mid '80s. It recalls singles such as "Senses Working Overtime," "Love on a Farmboy's Wages," and "All You Pretty Girls." Like that English Settlement/Mummer/Big Express blueprint, Herrick's not energized enough to be new wave, nor '60s enough to be retro, but lies somewhere in that middle place, where shy lads sing like chirping birds at all the elegance and sobriety life throws. Perhaps the production is lower-budget than that of his hero's work, but there's minor, fresh-faced appeal.

The combined influences of abrasive punk and heartfelt melodies represent Mock Orange to a point of being thrown into the category of "emo." But the opportunity of four friends growing up and playing music together is more important than any classification of their sound. Developed by Ryan (guitar/vocals), Joe (guitar/vocals), Brandon (bass) and Heath (drums), Mock Orange eventually signed with Lobster Records, released their first full-length Nines & Sixes in 1998 and followed the rest of the year with a full-scale tour of the United States. Record Play arrived a year later.

BoDeans Biography

Emerging from the roots rock movement of the 1980s, the BoDeans scored a hit with 1993's "Closer to Free" and maintained their heartland sensibilities for decades to come. The push and pull between Sam Llanas' gritty tenor and acoustic guitar and Kurt Neumann's smoother, bolder voice and punchy electric leads dominated their 1986 debut album, Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams. While a greater pop sensibility informed 1989's Home and 1993's Go Slow Down, the passionate core of their songs remained secure. In the 2000s, the BoDeans stepped away from major labels and continued at their own pace, releasing discs including 2010's Mr. Sad Clown. Following Llanas' departure, the band endured, with 2015's I Can't Stop and 2022's 4 the Last Time offering mature variations on their time-honored themes.
