PET ENGINE Feeling Like A Hundred Bucks 1997

Discogs

AllMusic Review by

Feeling Like a Hundred Bucks sounds like it could have been huge -- most of its composition is in line with the sort of vaguely indie, post-grunge rock that dominated "alternative" radio and much of MTV in the late '90s. In an independent context, however, this oh-so-standard sound is a fairly large liability -- decent hooks and songwriting don't quite make up for the lack of stylistic innovation and slick production the record features. For those far on the mainstream end of rock, however, Feeling Like a Hundred Bucks has a chance at being very appealing.

Discogs

Artist Biography by

Chung Wayne Lo Mein Bassist Mike Ruffino, guitarist/vocalist Matt Pierce, and drummer Eugene Ferrari formed the Unband in 1988, combining the hard guitar edge of bands like AC/DC and Motorhead with the old-school garage punk attitude of the Dead Boys and the Stooges. In the years following, the band gained a reputation for their debaucherous live shows, as they were often kicked out of Boston-area clubs for vomiting, lighting things on fire, and stripping naked. The Northampton, MA, trio's songs celebrated the same sorts of hedonism, hyping an abundance of drinking, drugs, and girls. In 1996, the band released their debut album, Chung Wayne Lo Mein, on Chunk records. TVT released the Unband's major-label follow-up, Retarder, in 2000.

Artist Biography by

Even though their native Chapel Hill, NC, has been renowned for its indie upbringing of Superchunk, the Scaries revealed a poppier, more aggressive influence. By taking a cue from the likes of the Descendants, Lifetime, and Jawbreaker, the lineup of Matt (guitar/vocals), Matt (drums), Mike (guitar), and Bill (bass) would release a couple of scattered singles under the Scaries moniker before Dead Ant Farm Records released their first full-length, Over You, in 1997. Following one U.S. tour and three years, their second album, Wishing One Last Time, came out in 2000 with some help from Route 14 Records.

SILVER SUN Silver Sun 1997

Discogs

AllMusic Review by

Their first album proper, Silver Sun don't mess with their formula much but come out smelling sweet due to James Broad's knack for writing classy pop songs with a bite. "Golden Skin" kicks the doors open and the band never lets up. "Julia," "Dumb," "Service" and "Bad Haircut" join the list of top-notch Silver Sun songs, with nothing on the album falling below the quality control limits set by their first batch of singles. With not much variation between songs, some may find it easier to take the album in doses, but, as a whole, it's pretty damn impressive.
