The Scissor Girls were a Chicago no wave band formed by
Azita Youssefi, Sue Anne Zollinger, and Heather Melowic in 1991. The
idea to form the group was conceived during the late eighties by Azita
Youssefi and Heather Melowic while they were living in their hometown of
Washington, DC. In 1989, after moving to Chicago to attend the Art
Institute of Chicago, Youssefi met guitarist Sue Anne Zollinger who,
following the addition of Heather Melowic on drums, agreed to join the
trio. The original lineup of the band included of Azita Youssefi on bass
and vocals, Sue Anne Zollinger on guitar, and Heather Melowic on drums.

Math rock band Pecola wanted to create the heaviest, most intense live show they could think of when they began in 1994, so the group incorporated an air of violence in their sound and a stage show that breathed of fright, apocalypse, and pure force. All of their members were self-taught musicians who honed their craft listening to other music and through confrontational collaborations among each other. The one thing they were probably most known for was their constant tempo and time signature changes. In order to keep their audiences 100 percent involved in their live shows, Pecola decided to implement challenging structures into their music. This meant breaking away from the standard four/four time signatures that made up most rock. According to bass player Craig Thompson (aka Blind Willie Thompson), there was never a time change just for the sake of throwing one into the mix, but to serve the purpose of each song. It was in the beginning of 1994 in Toronto when Pecola received their start by communicating through friends and answering various newspaper ads. The first incarnation didn't last long, though, due to the fact that drummer Chris LaRue (aka Johnny LaRue) was leaving to join mid-'90s post-punk band Smallmouth, and one of the two guitarists wasn't fitting into Pecola's chemistry. This led to remaining guitarist Jamie Fleming (aka Dog Fancy) and Thompson holding tryouts for new replacements. They finally found guitarist Zak Hanna (aka Deep Throat Latrine) and drummer Gideon Steinberg (aka Gideon) to fill the vacated spots. After they realized that they all held common interests in punk, rock & roll, blues, and rap, they decided to play music similar to Drive Like Jehu, Shellac, Jesus Lizard, Polvo, and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion that defied the standards of what rock was supposed to be. After practicing for almost a year, Pecola put out a cassette-only release on the Cheap Precious Metal label. They followed the release with a tour of the east coast of Canada with Smallmouth in one van. It was also during that year that they had their song, "Contact Lens," released on a compilation titled True Independence, Vol. 2. When 1996 arrived, Pecola members Thompson and Fleming, along with Smallmouth drummer LaRue, decided to put their own record label together. What resulted was Slipped Disc, inspired by bands like Fugazi, who did the same thing in order to get their product out. It was also at this time that future Teenage U.S.A. Recordings head Phil Klygo was running Skull Geek records. After Pecola approached Klygo, he agreed to help distribute the band's new 7" through Skull Geek. When the release came out, it was under the imprint of Skull Geek/Slipped Disc and included a Tony Walsh comic. The band toured the United States, hitting places like Philadelphia and others like Arkansas, where they incited a kid riot. In the beginning of 1997, Pecola wrapped up work on their first 12" vinyl EP, titled Dat Hoang, a Vietnamese name that meant the same thing as generic U.S. term "John Smith." Following the release, the group toured the United States once again. Later that year, the group had a song called "Bubble Needle Barbie" released on a cassette compilation titled Wish I Was on Lil' Red Wagon records. Pecola came as a recommendation to Lil' Red Wagon from their friends in Slowgun and Smallmouth. From the end of 1997 into 1998, the group toured with various bands, including Shotmaker, the New Bomb Turks, Polvo, Picastro, Do Make Say Think, Bardo Pond, Okara, Versus, Venus Cures All, and the Grifters. In mid-1998, Pecola released a split 7" with Smallmouth under a verbal contractual agreement with Teenage U.S.A. Their friends in the band Skinner Pilot also recommended Pecola to a Pennsylvania label called Monstro Records. The label listened to the group and released the song "Catabasis" from the Dat Hoang EP on a compilation called Importance of Falling. In 1999, another verbal contractual agreement was worked out with Toronto label Kosher Rock Records to release Pecola's first full-length album, titled The Mexican. This was to become the band's first and last full-length, though, because by mid-2000 the band's members grew tired of performing loud music and decided to call it quits.

Chepo Peña, Ryan McDaniel, Paul Newman and Keith Palumbo.
Active starting in the early 1990s, the group settled out of court
with the British indie band Gomez over the use of their name. Since
then, the Austin band has performed some reunion shows in 1998 and
beyond under names such as G.O.M.E.Z. or The Greatest American Gomez.

The punk trio Another Joe has been brandishing their own raucous thrash since 1995 when frontman/guitarist Jon Glen, bassist Alison Toews, and drummer John Rylance formed in their native Vancouver. In 1996, Another Joe released their first album Pee Against the Wind, followed by their joint 1997 CD with Gob entitled Ass Seen on TV. Toward the latter part of the '90s Another Joe was making headlines across Canada, touring with bands such as No Use for a Name, Chixdiggit, SNFU, Diesel Boy, and High Standard. They released Cran-Doodle Daddy in 1998 and followed up a year later with Plasti-scene.

Not to be confused with the Elvis TV special or Brian Setzer power trio of the same name, '68 Comeback rose from the ashes of Ohio's psychobilly kings, the Gibson Bros., in 1992. Spearheaded by now Memphis-based singer/songwriter/musicologist Jeffrey Evans -- who's said to have a shrine to rockabilly great Charlie Feathers in his living room -- this stripped-down blues-rock monster roared out of the garage (i.e. Evans' home studio) with a series of well-received singles on In the Red, Sub Pop, Get Hip, and a variety of other independent labels. Aside from Monsieur Evans (as he was now billing himself) on vocals, guitar, and blues harp, the initial lineup included Peggy O'Neill (the Gories) on drums, Darin Lin Wood (the Red Devils) on guitar, Dan Brown (Gloryhole) on bass, and Jack Taylor (Monster Truck Five) on guitar. (Yes, that's right -- three guitars.) Evans has claimed that their primary goal was to play live and to as accurately as possible recreate that live sound on record. On the strength of their first two singles, Chantilly Rock (And a Pony's Tail) (Sugar Ditch) and Three Time Loser (Sympathy for the Record Industry), they undertook a 60-day, 42-city U.S. tour. O'Neill was unable to make it, so Greg Cartwright (the Oblivians) took her place on the traps.
Upon completion of the cross-country jaunt, they went straight into the studio and laid down the tracks for their first EP, "Paper Boy Blues" (1993). Their first full-length, Mr. Downchild, followed in 1994. That same year, Sympathy compiled the 45s and the EP (plus a number of alternate takes and unreleased tracks) into the Golden Rogues Collection and continued to release all their full-length recordings. Over the next few years, '68 Comeback issued several more 7"s -- including the double-single Someday My Prince Will Come (1996) -- and contributed to the soundtrack compilations, The Sore Losers (1997) and Shine On, Sweet Starlet (1998). Their most ambitious release to date, Bridge Too Fuckin' Far, hit the streets in 1998. The 21-track double-LP was dedicated to guitarist Jack Taylor (born 1965), who had died of a drug overdose the previous year (that's his picture on the cover). It was followed by 1999's Love Always Wins, which consisted primarily of covers and is widely considered their most accessible release.
In the 2000s, Evans released a solo recording (I've Lived a Rich Life) and produced a number of artists, including Tav Falco's Panther Burns, Mr. Airplane Man, and the American Death Ray, at Tillman Audio Research (which also doubles as his living room). He's a charismatic live performer, known as much for his spirited singing and playing as for his entertaining, self-deprecating anecdotes, and eccentric sartorial statements (bowler hats, three-piece suits, etc.). Just as '68 Comeback's lineup has continued to mutate over the past decade -- with Evans as its only mainstay -- he's also played with other groups, such as Jeffrey Evans' C.C. Riders, the Porch Ghouls, and South Filthy. One way or the other, whether solo, with '68 Comeback, or some other like-minded outfit, it's hard not to imagine Monsieur Evans rocking and rolling on into his golden years just like his hero, Charlie Feathers.

break-up but transitioned to a more indie rock/alternative sound upon
reuniting.

Catapult put out just one album during their tenure, 1998's The Architecture of a Year, released in 1998 on California indie label Blackbean and Placenta Records. The band mixed shoegazer sensibilities with dub beats, intertwined with gentle vocals in the vein of My Bloody Valentine, Joy Division, and Mogwai. Drummer Sean Dack went on to drum with the Swirlies and, oddly enough, later directed a video by the band Korn.

Schlong first came into being around 1988, cropping up in the same Oakland County area that Operation Ivy used to haunt. The band performed in that area often, mostly at warehouse parties under various names. The name Schlong did not appear until sometime later, taken from the name of a cat the band saw often. They eventually released their first record in 1995, Punk Side Story, a drunken punk rock version of West Side Story, and promptly disappeared after the release. A collection of singles followed the next year, but the band was unofficially disbanded at that point, and has not appeared since the mid-'90s.
